Minutes of the Annual Meeting of the Council, Held 18th May, 1945. The Annual Meeting of the Council of the Royal Society of New Zealand was held on Friday, 18th May, 1945, in the Council Room, Victoria University College, Wellington. His Excellency the Governor-General attended the meeting, and a short speech of welcome was made by the President, Dr. H. H. Allan, who referred to a resolution of loyalty to his Majesty the King passed by the Council at its annual meeting in 1940, a loyalty which was again expressed. In concluding, Dr. Allan said: “We trust that in your capacity as Honorary Patron of our Society you will be good enough to address us at the conclusion of the calling of the roll.” Roll Call: The following responded to the roll-call:— President: Dr. H. H. Allan. Vice-President: Dr. P. Marshall. Representing the Government: Mr. B. C. Aston, Dr. W. R. B. Oliver, Dr. G. Archey, Lieut.-Colonel E. Marsden. Representing Auckland Institute: Mr. A. T. Pycroft, Professor H. W. Segar. Representing Wellington Branch: Dr. L. I. Grange, Professor L. R. Richardson. Representing Canterbury Branch: Dr. R. A. Falla, Dr. O. H. Frankel. Representing Otago Branch: Dr. C. M. Focken, Dr. F. J. Turner. Representing Hawke's Bay Branch: Mr. G. V. Hudson. Representing Southland Branch: Professor W. P. Evans. Co-opted Member: Dr. J. Marwick. Honorary Treasurer: Mr. S. Cory-Wright was also in attendance.
Apologies were received from the Hon. the Minister for Scientific and Industrial Research and from Dr. D. Miller, representative of the Nelson Institute, who was absent in Australia. His Excellency the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, then addressed the Council. At the conclusion of the address the President thanked the Governor-General, and asked permission for his address to be printed in the Transactions of the Society. His Excellency assented, and then withdrew from the meeting. Presidential Address: Dr. Allan then delivered his presidential address, at the conclusion of which Dr. P. Marshall, Vice-President, moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to the President for his inspiring address and that he be asked to allow it to be printed in the Transactions. This was carried by acclamation. Hector Award: The President read the following recommendation from the Hector Award Committee:— The Committee consisting of Professor J. A. Bartrum. Dr. P. Marshall, and Dr. J. Marwick, unanimously recommend that the Hector Medal and Prize for 1945 be awarded to Dr. J. Henderson for researches in the geology of New Zealand. Dr. Henderson has published many papers covering a wide field in geology, making important contributions, particularly in the stratigraphic, structural and economic fields. J. Marwick, Convener.
