Wallis, William Fletcher, 1974-1958. Photograph album of images taken by Lieutenant Wallis during his service in the South African War (1899-1902) with the 6th New Zealand Mounted Rifles. (ATL ref: PAI-O-1894, pp. 39-40) These photos from Lieutenant Wallis's 1901 album show, according to their handwritten captions, 'veldt dentistry', 'group on an ant heap', a 'Zulu village', and 'a novel way of getting a drink'. Wallis's album is a unique and personal view of the South African War (1899-1902), the first overseas conflict to involve New Zealand troops. William Fletcher Wallis (1874-1958), a farmer from the Waikato, was one of the hundreds of men who applied to serve. He departed with the First Contingent on 21 October 1899. Wallis joined two later contingents and served for the duration of the war. He used a camera to document his service with the Sixth Contingent. His photograph album contains images of troopship scenes, encampments on the veldt, and Zulu villagers, as well as more confronting scenes of guerrilla warfare including blockhouses and Boer prisoners.
