Barraud, Charles Decimus, 1822-1897. Pukawa [Poukawa] Lake from the Te Aute Road, Hawkes Bay, 1862; [Torohonga Creek, [Abbot's Stream?] Rimutaka Road, 1869]; Mt Egmont, 1888; [Lake Wakatipu, 1883]; [Rushing Stream, 1889]. 5 watercolours. Mostly exhibition-quality landscapes showing settler activity, including farming, travel and surveying. Purchase.

Bell, Francis Dillon, 1822-1898. A View of his Brother's Grave, Nelson, 1845. Henry Angelo Bell preceded his betterknown brother to Nelson, as secretary to Arthur Wakefield, dying of typhoid fever in 1841, aged only 19. The view is also an important very early view of Nelson. Purchase.

Ellis Frederick Vincent, 1892-1961. [New Zealand Scenes and War Ruins in France, 1915-1945]. 9 etchings, 1 lithograph. A collection acquired from this well-known artist and art teacher's family include depictions of New Zealand university buildings and Murphy's brickyard, Wellington. Purchase.

Heaphy, Charles, 1820-1881.

[Nelson Foreshore, 1845]. Watercolour. From the same family collection as the Francis Dillon Bell watercolour described above. A very significant view of Nelson, showing the earliest houses, port buildings and boats on the waterfront. It is of the same high quality as the Library's existing collection of Heaphy's watercolours done in the 1840 s for the New Zealand Company. Purchase.

McCrae, Georgiana Huntly, 1804-1890. Captain Alexander McCrae, 84th Regiment, June 23rd, 1832. Watercolour. Ensign McCrae came to Northland aboard the Dromedary in 1820, spending 10 months in the Bay of Islands. Purchase.

Minhinnick, Gordon, 1902-1992. [Political cartoons, 19305-1980s]. 11l ink on paper. Includes rare examples of Minhinnick's early work and preliminary drawings. Donation.

Oliver, Richard Aldworth, 1811-1889. Ihawera [c. 1850]; [Maori woman and child outside a stockade, c. 1850]. 2 watercolours. The first view shows three women in a kainga or pa, probably in the Hauraki district. The second is not identified as to location. Purchase.

Miller, Phillip. The Gardener's and Botanist's Dictionary: Containing the Best and Newest Methods of Cultivating ...; the whole corrected and newly arranged by Thomas Martyn (London: Printed for F. C. & J. Rivington, 1807). This edition of Miller's benchmark work on gardening and horticulture was the first such to include plants from Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific. It is based in large part on the collection of Sir Joseph Banks and is often referred to as the 'South Seas Edition'. Purchase.
