Notable Acquisitions, July 2009-June 2010

A selection of notable acquisitions covering all the collections is listed in the Turnbull Library Record to alert researchers to newly acquired material judged to be of significant research value. Additions to existing collections are not usually listed, except where they add substantially to what is already held. ARCHIVE OF NEW ZEALAND MUSIC Besser, Jonathan, 1941-. Papers, 1969-2008. 4 m. A wide-ranging record of Besser's career, including correspondence, scores, recordings, promotional material and photographs. Donation. Huggard, Dennis, 1928-. Further Recordings. 900 cds. The Huggard Jazz Archive was a major accession last year. This year's accession comprises Huggard's compilation of New Zealand jazz and non-jazz, together with annotated listings. Donation. Lilburn, Douglas, 1915-2001. Allegro for Strings/Poem by Allen Curnow, 1942-1943. 1 folder. This score, signed and annotated by Lilburn, appears to have been the copy kept by English conductor Thomas Matthews, who conducted the work when he was in New Zealand in 1942. Also includes clippings and papers about Lilburn. Purchase. Radio Active 89FM. Recordings, ca 1980-1997. 584 cassettes. Received earlier but not accessioned until now, this is a rich collection of demo tapes and alternate mixes of New Zealand rock, pop, reggae and jazz. Donation.

DRAWINGS, PAINTINGS & PRINTS [Adams, John], fl. 1840 s. [Auckland in February 1844]. Watercolour. The waterfront and township at Commercial Bay, looking towards Parnell Rise. At least two other versions of this view exist in other institutions, and this may be a copy or an original. Donation: Donald Cordes. Aubrey, Christopher, fl. 1868-1906. Kaitangata, South Otago, 1878 and St Peter's Anglican Church, Victoria Avenue, Wanganui, 1894. Watercolours. An earlier and a later example of small-town buildings painted by a prolific itinerant artist. Purchases.

Bates, Henry Stratton, 1836-1918. Port Napier... 1858 and Auckland Harbour, N Zealand, 1858. Watercolours. Early Auckland houses above Official Bay, and one of the earliest views in the collection of the wharves, houses and Bluff Hill in Napier by a member of the 65th Regiment. Purchase.

Bensemann, Leo Vernon, 1912-1986. [Sydney Lough Thompson, ca 1940]. Oil on canvas. A portrait of fellow Christchurch artist and art teacher. Thompson was Bensemann's landlord in Christchurch in the late 19305. Purchase.

Blomfield, Charles, 1848-1926. Rotokakahi from the Maori Village of Kaiteriria. 1882. Oil on canvas. Rotokakahi or Green Lake, near Rotorua, was a favourite subject for artists, but few included the adjacent large kainga, now a farm. Purchase.

Chevalier, Nicholas, 1828-1902. Leslie Hills Station, Canterbury, 1866. Watercolour. The farmhouse and outbuildings of Leslie Hills, Hurunui district, the station of George Rutherford. Purchase. Gold, Charles Emilius, 1809-1871. [Wellington Harbour between 1851 and 1858]. Watercolour. Purchase.

Goldie, Charles Frederick, 1870-1947. Self Portrait. A Mon Cher Roland, Paris, 1896. Oil on canvas. A self-portrait painted while the artist was a young man studying in Paris. Purchase. Heaphy, Charles, 1820-1881. Gold Mining, Driving Creek Coromandel, 1852. Watercolour. Previously owned by a member of the Wynyard family, this unfinished drawing records the 'long Tom' sluice used in gold mining, surrounded by kauri forest being cleared. Purchase. James Beard & Co. Oliver, Richard Aldworth, 1811-1889. Maori Travellers on a Road with a Packhorse, ca 1850. Watercolour. The road is likely to be Old Porirua Road. Oliver, captain of the HMS Fly, rode from Wellington to Otaki for a meeting with Rangihaeata in September 1851, and may have met this group on the way. Purchase. Swainson Family. [Drawings by William and George Swainson, 1843-1860]. 13 pencil drawings. Purchase. Williams, John, d. 1905. War Dance, NZ, 1858. Watercolour. The original for a celebrated engraving published in The Story of New Zealand (1858) by A. S. Thomson. It shows a large haka by Maori, all armed with rifles, and was drawn by Lance-Sergeant Williams of the 58th Regiment, artist of the earlier Northland War. Purchase.

Downard, Samuel Charles Gower, 1884-1916. Papers. 1 vol, 2 folders. Letters written by Downard to his wife and daughter while on active service at the Western Front during the First World War. Hayman, Arnolis, 1890-1971. Papers, 1934-1949. 21 folders. Includes Hayman's manuscript account of his capture by the then Chinese Red Army while serving with the China Inland Mission, and his involuntary participation in the Long March. Also includes correspondence, Chinese negotiation documents, papers relating to his trial and sentencing by the Red Army, maps and sketches. Donation: Hayman family. Marsh, Ngaio, 1895-1982. Purchase. Munce, William John, 1814-1892. Diary of Auckland Islands Colony, 1850-1852. 1 vol. Diary kept by Munce as magistrate of the short-lived colony, from his arrival and appointment by Lieutenant-Governor Charles Enderby to the disbandment of the settlement two years later. It details administration and daily life at Port Ross. Donation: Glenda Ross.
