Peter Hughes writes about New Zealand small presses and their impact in New Zealand publishing. His most recent publication is A book in the hand: Essays on the history of the book in New Zealand (Auckland University Press, 2000) which he co-edited, and in which he has an essay on Bob Lowry’s Pelorus Press.

Jill Palmer has been Music Curator of the Alexander Turnbull Library’s Archive of New Zealand Music since 1980. She is a member of the Music Advisory Committee of the Lilbum Trust and has served in several capacities on the committee of the New Zealand Branch of the International Association of Music Libraries.

David Pearson is Librarian of the Wellcome Library, in London, England, and worked previously in the National Art Library and the British Library. He is Secretary to the Bibliographical Society and his research focuses on the history of book ownership and bookbinding. His books include Provenance research in book history (British Library, 1994), Oxford bookbinding 1500-1640 (Oxford Bibliographical Society, 2000) and, as editor, For the love of the binding: Studies in bookinding presented to Mirjam Foot (British Library, 2000).

Patricia Thomas is a designer and lecturer in graphic design at the College of Design, Fine Arts and Music, Massey University, Wellington. She has recently completed a Masters degree which analyses the typographic work of Robert William Lowry.

Noel Waite has recently been appointed Curator of Social History at the Manawatu Museum, Palmerston North. He was Post-doctoral Fellow on the Otago regional History of Print Culture project in 1999-2000, and is writing a book on Canterbury publishers.

Lydia Wevers has been working on the print culture of travel writing about New Zealand as part of the History of Print Culture project since 1998. Her most recent book is Travelling to New Zealand (Oxford University Press, 2000) and next year she will publish Country of writing (Auckland University Press). She is currently Director of the Stout Research Centre, Victoria University of Wellington.
