Notes on Accessions to the Manuscripts and Archives Collection

A Selective List of Acquisitions, July 1997 to June 1998

A selection of manuscripts and archives acquisitions is listed in the Turnbull Library Record to alert researchers to newly acquired material judged to be of significant research value. Additions to existing collections are not usually listed, except where they add substantially to what is already held. Microfilm material produced by the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau and the Australian Joint Copying Project has also not been included. New accessions for the Archive of New Zealand Music are listed in Crescendo, the bulletin of the International Association of Music Libraries (New Zealand Branch). For access to newly acquired collections the Library would welcome notification that access will be sought, preferably with an indication of a likely date. This will help staff in establishing priorities in processing collections.

adkin, george Leslie. Ethnological notebooks, 1930-1963. 70cm. These notebooks represent Adkin’s research into archaeological sites, place names, artefacts and other ethnological topics. bolton, Geoffrey. The Fama-Bolton collection, 1917-1940. 1 folder. These papers are source materials for Bolton’s book, Warrior entertainers (1997). They include material on his father, Bert Bolton, and Tano Fama who were members of the Digger Pierrots troupe which began during World War I. donation.

bridge, thomas richard. Diary kept on board the Zealandia, 1884. 2 folders. Bridge describes his voyage on the Zealandia giving details of his fellow passengers and including illustrations; accompanied by a transcript, donation: Mr H. W. Bridge, Opotiki.

koea, shonagh. Literary papers, 1981-1993. lm. The papers comprise correspondence with publishers and drafts of Koea’s stories, novels and poems. PURCHASE.

lawlor, Patrick Anthony. Papers relating to History and bibliography, 1948-1950. 1 volume, 1 folder. Nine letters from David Macmillan, editor of History and bibliography , and papers relating to the periodical. The Library has many other papers that have originally come from Lawlor’s collection, purchase.

lawn, Robert g. Beneath the green canopy. 1 folder. Lawn surveyed indigenous forest cover while working on the National Forest Survey from 1946 to 1956. He describes his training and forests surveyed which included the Ureweras, Rotorua, South Westland and Southland, donation.

Letters relating to New Zealand, 1865-1963. 14cm. The letters have come from an unidentified Edinburgh solicitor’s office and mostly comprise correspondence relating to legal matters of various families (Bartle, Campbell, Clarke, Riddell and others). They also include personal letters from a woman while cruising in the Pacific at various times between 1955 and 1963. purchase.

lusk, peter. Share the dream, 1996-1998. 1 folder. Lusk’s experiences were the basis of the television production ‘Share the Dream’, and he describes working on the clothes drier production line at Fisher and Paykel, and industrial relations practices at that time, donation.

mcalpine, rachel. Literary papers, 1974-1998. 54cm. The papers include drafts and correspondence relating to McAlpine’s literary projects and includes interviews with New Zealand romantic novelists for her book The passionate pen (1998). PURCHASE. Partial restriction

maconochie, john allan h. Journal of a tour through New Zealand, 1871-1872. 1 microfilm reel. A microfilm copy of a diary of a Scottish tourist, recording his travels in Australia and New Zealand. The New Zealand sections include accounts of Hokitika, Wellington, Wairarapa, Napier, Rotorua, Auckland and Thames, donation: Mr C. M. Welwood, Scotland.

maunder, paul alan. Papers relating to Amamus Theatre and Theatre of the Eighth Day, 1970-1979. 60cm. Maunder was associated with the founding of both these Wellington theatres. Amamus Theatre was the parent of the Theatre of the Eighth Day and both were associated with experimental and innovative productions. mortimer-jones, clive. Letters to his family and his church, 1909-1911. 6cm. Mortimer-Jones was a home missionary for the Church of England in the Hokianga area. The collection comprises his letters to his family in England and letters to church officials, donation: Mr J. Mortimer, Hamilton.

muir, william mcintosh. Papers, 1880-1905. 12cm. Muir was a Wellington valuer and businessman. The papers reflect his business interests and include a few family letters, donation: Dr H. G. Knoetgen, Wellington, and Graz, Austria.

poppleton, philip george. Campbell Island diaries, 1958-1960. 2 volumes. Poppleton was leader of a Meteorological Service team based on Campbell Island manning a radiosonde station; he recorded daily routines and included observations of birds, seals and other wildlife, donation. proudfoot, john.
