A Selective List of Acquisitions, July 1995 to June 1996

Acquisitions of paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture are listed selectively in the Turnbull Library Record to alert scholars to newly-acquired material judged to be of research value. The following list updates ‘Notes on Accessions to the Drawings and Prints Collection’, Turnbull Library Record 28 (1995), 102-04. Only original works and significant engravings and prints are included; photomechanical reproductions recently published are excluded.

artist unknown. [Maori Meeting, Bay of Islands, 1860s?] Oil on canvas. An orator addressing a ring of Maori. Purchased with a scene of Westland glaciers by the same artist, purchase. artist unknown. Mount Hutt Station, Canterbury, New Zealand [lß6os], Ink. Mt Hutt station was first settled in 1857 and this work records the early homestead and farm buildings, purchase.

acres, thyra avis mary, 1910-95. [Original Drawings and Watercolours for Natural History Publications and Children’s Books, 1950 sto 1980s] Watercolour, pencil, ink, crayon, seven sketchbooks, printed material. Includes notes and indexes to Avis Acres’s work and the original watercolours for her Hutu and Kawa series. bequest: Estate of Miss Avis Acres, Tauranga.

aubrey, Christopher. [Paterson Inlet, Stewart Island] 1879. Watercolour. The farm of Dennison ‘Yankee’ Smith at the water’s edge. Like many of Aubrey’s watercolours, this painting was produced in return for hospitality, purchase. aubrey, Christopher. [St Matthew’s Church and Hall, Masterton] 1890. Watercolour. The first St Matthew’s Anglican church in Masterton, situated on the comer of Church and Dixon Streets, demolished about 1914. The hall was moved and is still in use. PURCHASE.

aubrey, Christopher. [Tarueka Homestead, Featherston, 1890] Watercolour. Shows the home of James Donald, with a building thought to be the region’s first butter factory, opened in 1881. purchase. barraud, Charles decimus, 1822-97. [Cottage on the Farm, Te Ore Ore, Masterton] 1856. Watercolour. A record of the homestead and outbuildings of one of the earliest European farms established in the Wairarapa. purchase.

clere, Fitzgerald and Richmond. Proposed Wesleyan Church, Newtown, 1891-1892. Ink and watercolour. Three plans, donation: Mr Arthur Olsson, Karori. heath, eric walmsley, b. 1923 [Archive of Original Cartoons for the Dominion, 1966-92] Ca. 3000 ink cartoons. A significant accession to the New Zealand Cartoon Archive of the originals of a lifetime’s work by the Dominion’s long-serving staff cartoonist, donation: Mr Eric Heath, Waikanae.

Portraits of Isabel Hodgkins and possibly of Frances’ mother Rachel in 1885. bequest: Estate of Dr Eric McCormick, Auckland. hodgkins, william mathew, 1833-98. [Sketchbook] 1865-1867 and [Six sketches, 1885]. 45 pencil and watercolour in sketchbook; five watercolours; one pencil sketch. Sketchbook views around Dunedin, Taieri, Lake Waihola, and Milford Sound. hurt, Theodore octavius. New Zealand Views. Sketchbook, 1865-1869. 65 watercolour and ink and wash in sketchbook. Two excellent views of Hokitika in the midst of the goldrush, and other Westland views (Otira area, Taramakau River) along with many Canterbury scenes (Akaroa, Hororata, Pigeon Bay, Bealey district, Arthur’s Pass, Waiau River, Sumner, Lyttelton, Timaru). purchase. lewin, john william, 1770-1819. [A Hoodee o Gunna, Chief of Rangee Hoo, ca. 1815] Watercolour. The original watercolour by a Sydney artist for an engraved portrait (published in London in 1824) of a Rangihoua (Bay of Islands) chief whose name was probably Te-Uri-o-Kanae. purchase.

A rare lithographic view from the Bridle Path, Port Hills, looking down over the newly settled Canterbury plain, and an important early example of local pictorial publication, purchase. paul, janet elaine, b. 1919. Somes Island, Wellington, New Zealand, 1877. Pencil. A view from the east of Wellington Harbour with detail of a substantial building that is not known from other drawings or photographs, purchase.

shelley, james, 1884-1961. [Portrait of Walter Harris. Between 1925 and 1940] Charcoal. Walter Harris was involved in the setting-up of the National Film Library and was an associate of James Shelley, donation: Transfer from Manuscripts and Archives, 1996, from either the Shelley or Harris papers.

swan, john Sydney, 1874-1936. [Architectural Plans and Drawings, 1903-07] 21 ink and watercolour. Includes plans for the National Bank’s head office, the Convent of Mercy in Newtown, the Masterton Club, and F. J. Grace Ltd, Christchurch, donation: Swan papers, 1973; plans transferred to Drawings and Prints, 1986. Thomson, john turnbull, 1821-84. Crossing the Mataura, 11 Jan 1857.
