NOTES ON MANUSCRIPT ACCESSIONS

A SELECTIVE LIST OF ACQUISITIONS JANUARY 1973 TO DECEMBER 1973 The following list continues the Note in the Record for October 1973. As before it is in two main categories, firstly, original manuscripts which have been donated or purchased and secondly, material lent to the Library for copying. This group includes important collections on microfilm purchased from holding institutions but because of lack of space material copied by the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau or as part of the Australian Joint Copying Project is excluded. Original manuscripts purchased from the estate of Mr K. A. Webster, London, will be listed separately later.

An analysis of the speech activities of the Aboriginal Maori of New Zealand, 1950. Purchase. Includes description of ceremonies and rites of Maoris, public discussions, songs, incantations and legends. Positive microfilm.

ANDREWS, John Joseph, ca. 1895Writings, ca. 1968. 3 items. Donation: Mr J. J. Andrews, Raglan. The Adventures of John covers the writer’s life as musician and dramatic producer and his impressions of wild life and agriculture in England, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The second manuscript, The Westminster Glee Singers and Edward Branscomb, provides a history of Branscomb’s musical and speculative activities and the Glee Singers tour of Australasia in the twenties. Biblical script.

ARNOLD, Thomas, 1823-1900. Letters, 1848-1896. 75 items. Donation: Mrs M. C. Moorman, Ripon, Yorkshire. A further gift which greatly broadens the scope of existing collection. Majority of letters written from Tasmania covering family matters, local gossip and activities as Inspector of Schools. New Zealand letters and some from Dublin.

BARRETT, Thomas Murray. Notebooks, 1842-1969. 19v. Donation: Mrs E. D. Barrett, Wanganui. Material collected mainly from newspapers for a proposed work on the history of schools in the Wanganui district.

BARRINGTON, Archibald Charles, 1906Papers, 1929-1971. 23£ft. Donation: Mr A. C. Barrington, Lower Moutere. Correspondence, notes, articles, publications, clippings and records relating to his longstanding interest in pacifism and communitarianism. Barrington was co-founder of the New Zealand Christian Pacifist Society and an early member of the Riverside Community at Lower Moutere. Restricted access.

The birth, life and death of a settlement. Mangapurua, 1917-(1942). 31 1. Donation: Mr F. C. Bettjeman, Te Kuiti. Reminiscences of a backblocks farmer carving out his farm from virgin bush in a soldier settlement. Describes the progress and abandonment of settlement at Mangapurua, Waitomo County.

BUCKLAND, William Harold, 1870-1941. South African diary, 1900-1905. Donation: Miss N. M. Buckland. A corporal in the N.Z. 4th (Rough Riders) Contingent in South Africa, 1900-1901, Buckland kept a daily record of events, illustrated with ink sketches, mainly of wild life, which he sent home as letters. Some letters from others to Buckland and background information by donor.

COLENSO, Elizabeth, 1824-1904. Inwards letters, 1836-1881. 11 items. Donation: Mrs E. B. Simcox, Otaki. Letters primarily concerned with Mrs Colenso’s care of Hare Pomare and his wife Hariata who visited England in 1863. Their child Albert Victor became Queen Victoria’s godson.

COLLINSON, Thomas Bernard, 1822-1902. Letters, 1846-1869. 32 letters. Purchase. Correspondence mostly to members of his family from Wellington,

Wanganui and Auckland, with impressions of the Maoris, particularly Te Rauparaha and Te Rangihaeata, account of 1848 earthquake, references to Thomas Arnold etc. Sketches.

EMPSON, Charles, 1821-1875. Journal of a voyage from the Port of London in the ship London . . . to Wellington, New Zealand, 1842. Purchase. Account of voyage largely commenting on weather but listing passengers, deaths on board and extracts from London’s log. Genealogical information on Empson and Clendon families.

FOLEY, Dr Antoine Edouard. Eki. Toumata, Ouenga. Father and God of the Cruel Human Beings. 111 p. Purchase. Typescript translation of Foley’s book in French—a work of fiction describing life in New Zealand ca. 1830, and recounting Maori legends.

FOX, Charles Arundel Overbury, 1886?-1971. Papers, 1935, 1966. 7 items. Purchase. Two letters from Mrs Alfred Docker, 1935, re George Scharf’s portrait of John Rutherford: ‘the tattooed Englishman’ ( ca . 1829) formerly in the Docker collection of English street characters. Dr Fox’s notes and correspondence 1966 extracted from library’s copy of Robert Snow’s Poems on Miscellaneous Subjects . . . published in 1843 and including a long poem on Bishop Selwyn’s departure for New Zealand.

JAPANESE song book, 1943. 52 1. Donation: Mr Bruce Thomson, Wellington. Book of popular songs found on the person of a Japanese prisoner of war killed in the riot in the P.O.W. camp at Featherston, 25 February 1943. Constructed from flattened Tasman cigarette packets tied with linen thread.

JARVIS, J. B. C. Records of officers and others of 43rd regiment who saw service at the engagement at Gate Pa, 28-29 April 1864. 1 inch. Donation: Lt. Col. J. B.
