A SELECTIVE LIST OF ACQUISITIONS JANUARY 1973 TO DECEMBER 1973 The following list continues the Note in the Record for October 1973. As before it is in two main categories, firstly, original manuscripts which have been donated or purchased and secondly, material lent to the Library for copying. This group includes important collections on microfilm purchased from holding institutions but because of lack of space material copied by the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau or as part of the Australian Joint Copying Project is excluded. Original manuscripts purchased from the estate of Mr K. A. Webster, London, will be listed separately later.

ANDREWS, John Joseph, ca. 1895Writings, ca. 1968. 3 items. Donation: Mr J. J. Andrews, Raglan. The Adventures of John covers the writer’s life as musician and dramatic producer and his impressions of wild life and agriculture in England, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The second manuscript, The Westminster Glee Singers and Edward Branscomb, provides a history of Branscomb’s musical and speculative activities and the Glee Singers tour of Australasia in the twenties. Biblical script.

ARNOLD, Thomas, 1823-1900. Letters, 1848-1896. 75 items. Donation: Mrs M. C. Moorman, Ripon, Yorkshire. A further gift which greatly broadens the scope of existing collection. Majority of letters written from Tasmania covering family matters, local gossip and activities as Inspector of Schools. New Zealand letters and some from Dublin.

BARRINGTON, Archibald Charles, 1906Papers, 1929-1971. 23£ft. Donation: Mr A. C. Barrington, Lower Moutere. Correspondence, notes, articles, publications, clippings and records relating to his longstanding interest in pacifism and communitarianism. Barrington was co-founder of the New Zealand Christian Pacifist Society and an early member of the Riverside Community at Lower Moutere. Restricted access.

Reminiscences of a backblocks farmer carving out his farm from virgin bush in a soldier settlement. Describes the progress and abandonment of settlement at Mangapurua, Waitomo County.

BUCKLAND, William Harold, 1870-1941. South African diary, 1900-1905. Donation: Miss N. M. Buckland. A corporal in the N.Z. 4th (Rough Riders) Contingent in South Africa, 1900-1901, Buckland kept a daily record of events, illustrated with ink sketches, mainly of wild life, which he sent home as letters. Some letters from others to Buckland and background information by donor.
