FRENCH EXPLORERS IN THE PACIFIC, about 73/- NZ Volume 1: The Eighteenth Century JOHN DUNMORE Senior Lecturer in French at Massey University of Manawatu The story of French exploration in Pacific waters has never been told in full. This work aims to present a complete panorama of French voyages of exploration from the closing years of the seventeenth to the middle of the nineteenth century. The first volume takes the story up to the end of the eighteenth century. A second volume will continue it to the 1840's when exploration gives way to political activities. Using much unpublished material, the author has shed light on many fascinating byways—intrigue and privilege at Court, women smuggled on board royal ships, courage and cowardice, suffering and death on long and dangerous voyages through unchartered waters. Anglo-French rivalry and the unending struggle for power and empire are always in the background. … of all good booksellers … OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS WELLINGTON
