MAORI CHURCH IN MASTERTON A new Anglican church built in Masterton features some prominent Maori decorations. This new earthquake-resistant church has been built to replace the Anglican Church of St Mathew which was demolished 16 years ago after it was severely damaged by an earthquake. The new church was dedicated by the Assistant Bishop to the Primate, the Rt. Rev. E. J. Rich, who was vicar of Masterton when the earthquake occurred. The baptistry walls have been lined with tukutuku and symbolic carvings and scrolls have been donated by the Maori people. The font incorporates both European carving and Maori tukutuku embellishments, a symbol of the unity of the Maori and pakeha in Christian fellowship. The work was carried out by the Maori people of Wairarapa, assisted by the Wellington Council of Adult Education.
