MR NGAHIWI TAMIHANA Ngahiwi Tamihana, of Ngati Manu, one of the last survivors of the Gisborne district community who remembered personal experiences of the Hauhau fighting and of the time when Te Kooti roamed the hills, has died at Manutuke in his ninety-ninth year. When militia and Maori forces were mustered to protect the settlement of Turanga against Te Kooti's forces, he was chosen at the age of ten to act as a link between the forward positions and the force headquarters. In his later years he shared recollections of the Te Kooti era with many who had taken part against the government, and who knew the events of the campaign from the other side.
