SHOOT THE DJ
AUCKLAND July turned out to be a graveyard month for many parties and promoters. It seems like the first six months of this year has spoilt Aucklanders for choice. Hopefully the hibernation period is over and people will once again, turn out for the great events which are on offer ... this, month the clubs are set to bring some much needed stability to a confined and weary crowd. Picks for this month: the Box, Fridays .and Saturdays, for a dose of upfront house and techno, ■or for those into the more ‘uplifting’ of shenanigans, the Kase must be a go. Of course, the drum ‘n’ bass massive have got Thursdays at Herzog to look forward to ... on a different level, it's good to see some dance orientated DJs gaining a foothold on bFM. Some late shows are worth staying up for. In particular, always -worth a laugh is Hayden’s Tuesday night graveyard shift, at times quite bizarre, and also check out Jason’s selections of guests on Fridays, 11pm till lam. And not forgetting, 48 Sonic’s Sunday Roast of rinsin' drum ‘n’ bass ... : upcoming; Stomping Core present Diablo at the Kase on August 15; on the same night Underworld's touring DJ, Darren Price, plays at Herzog to promote his solo album, Under the Flight Path; Nick D’Angelo presents Britpopplng 4 at the Box/Celebre on Aug 16; the third anniversary Retro party goes down at Squid/Box/Celebre on Aug 23; Ascension with Mrs Wood (Trade, Heaven) hits the Kase on Aug 29; and the next night, the Island Of EA is on at Squid; also that night, Sugar, sees DJs Stephen Green and Donald Bennett play house grooves at Herzog ... so go out and support the talent on offer before the talent also hibernates. DAVE ROPER WELLINGTON It’s been a little on the quiet side of late, but things are still ticking along ... a couple of new bars have opened up. Firstly, the Judder Bar. Check it out on Wednesday for techno, trance and breakz, while Thursdays sees the new edition of Andee and Schmoo mixing up a seamless blend of deep house in the Come Together stylee. The other new bar is the converted Matterhorn. It’s been eagerly awaited and should find it’s niche as an intimate jazz bar... the only international of last month was Aldo Bender, who played ESC on a Thursday night to a reasonably big crowd, He repeated the fine form of last year, and left a happy crowd of groovers with smiles on their faces ... as we go to press, Eden are building up for their biggest production of the year, . The Advent. Despite last minute venue problems (there isn't one!!!!), the vibe on this one is big with lots of techno out-of-towners getting ready to converge on the capital... also on the techno tip, Darren Price is set to play La Luna on August 14 ... August 30 sees Mrs Wood play Luna in what looks set to be a big klub event... there’s been much talk around town about Luna of late. It’s now under new ownership, and a change in music direction looks likely, with a move away from hip-hop to dance music. A brave move or a sign of the times? Either way they should be supported ... meanwhile a Ninja Tune tour is on the way, and Psurkitßreaker happens on August 9 with DJs Audrey, Tjaden, Cyrus, and Cuff, plus special guests. Venue info is printed on the tickets, available from Flipside and Troubador ... Flipside now have a highly attractive looking website from the brains that brought you the excellent and now famous Obscure. Check them out at www.flipside.co.nz and obscure.co.nz. ANDY PICKERING CHRISTCHURCH The final Phuture Beats night took place at the Ministry on July 12, ending the trio of parties on a resounding high note, with DJ Cyrus from Wellington blowing the crowd away with his awesome tracks and mixing skills ... July 26 saw the massive Voyager party, the sequel to Pluto. With three arenas and almost all different types of electronic music, nobody could' be unsatisfied ... On August 15, 081 will finally mark his return to Christchurch. The Jap Uplifting Alliance happening at the Ministry will feature 081, plus Japanese DJs Ishii, and Horn, plus locals Kinesis, Pylon, and Flux. The tour will also travel to Wellington and Auckland, so keep your eyes peeled in those centres for. those flyers ... the folks behind The Gathering are staging a warehouse rave in Christchurch on September 6 (rumours of a two day event are floating around). More details next month.
