NEW YEAR’S EVE
SUN FESTIVAL The two day Sun Festival takes place at Lake Tomarata, North of Wellsford on Dec 30 and 31, New Year’s Eve. Australian artists appearing are Def-FX, punkers Frenzal Rhomb, all-girl rock band Nitocris, guitarist Tommy Emmanuel and acid jazzers Directions In Groove. New Zealand artists at the Sun Festival are the Mutton Birds, Shihad, Head Like A Hole, Superette, Eye TV, Sticky Filth, Future Stupid, Emma Paki, Thorazine Shuffle, Weta, the Urban Pacific Showcase, Alfalfameo and Ether. Tickets are on sale at Ticketek. PAKIRI ROCK FESTIVAL On New Year’s Eve, the Pakiri Surf & Rock Festival takes place at last year’s Festival site near Pakiri Beach. The line-up is Dead Flowers, Southside of Bombay, Second Child, Muckhole, Fat Mannequin, Ebola, Omen, Evergreen and Xtasy. There’s free camping on the site and gates open December 27. SHIHAD IN CHRISTCURCH Shihad play the popular New Year’s Eve, Dux De Lux outdoor gig at the Arts Centre, in Christchurch’s old University Buildings. This annual concert has previously featured artists such as Dave Dobbyn, the Exponents and the Headless Chickens. 4 FLYING NUNS, POWERSTATION A good recent to visit Auckland is four top Flying Nun bands playing New Year’s Eve at Auckland’s Powerstation — the 3Ds, Headless Chickens, Garageland and Loves Ugly Children. MILLENIUM 4, AOTEA CENTRE Once again, on New Year’s Eve, the Aotea Centre is the site for the Millenium party with three dance zones, playing everything from Retro to Techno to R&B, House and Trance. Live recording artists appearing include DLT and Trueschool guests Che Fu, Teremoana, Mighty Asterix, B-Ware and Danny D. The Hallelujah Picassos will play and 3 The Hard Way will make their first live appearance in over a year, showcasing new songs due for release early in 1997.
