THE MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT AWARDS OE NEW ZEALAND

The Recording Industry Association of NZ (RIANZ), and New Zealand Entertainer Of The Year (NEOA) have combined to introduce The Music & Entertainment Awards Of New Zealand (MEANZ), to be held at the Aotea Centre in Auckland on Saturday April 13. Finalists for both the Single Of The Year and Album Of The Year categories were chosen on the basis of commercial success, ie. sales figures, and were not voted on by the main judging panel. The winner in these two categories will be chosen by public voting on the Clear toll-free line 0800-333-050 until April 8. Specialist judging panels voted on the following categories; Producer, Engineer, Mana Reo/Maori, Polynesian, Country, Jazz, Classical, Folk, Gospel, Childrens, Songwriter, and Cover Design. On the main judging panel were Paul Ellis (Sony Music), Kirk Harding (BMG), Nathan Graves (Polygram), Christine McGavin (Virgin), Shirley Charles (Festival), Jonathan Hughes (Warner Music), John Taite (95bFM), Mike Haru (Mai FM), Scott McPherson (The Box), Graham Reid (NZHerald), John Russell (RipltUp), Geoff Wright (Echo Records), Paul Olsthoorn (Astral Records), Craig Nuttall (Truetone Records), Petra Bagust (Ice TV), Richard Driver (Maxwell Film & TV), Eddie Hribar (Max TV), Cyril Chapman (Radio Tautoko FM), and Chairperson, lan Magan of Concert Promotions.

STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES Future Stupid are set to release their debut recording in the first week of May. The self-titled EP features the student radio faves ‘Shit Biscuit’ and ‘Big Dumb Future’, plus four other tracks. The Stupids play an all ages show at the Powerstation on Saturday May .4 with Nothing At All! and Muckhole. 1996SM0KEFREE ROCKQUEST ; The seventh annual Smokefree Rockquest is underway. For the first time this year, the competition is open to Intermediate school pupils as well as High school students. Also for the first time, a compilation album of Rockquest bands wil be released by Roadshow Music, and TVNZ and New Zealand On Air have combined to produce a one hour Rockquest special to be broadcast after the competition is completed. The regional finals run from May through till August, and the grand final takes place at the Wellington Town Hall on September 13.
