Alternative Woodstock
With a 25th Anniversary Woodstock Concert taking place this year an a Jimi Hendrix Live at Woodstock album is about to be released, Woodstock fever is upon us. Atlantic are reissuing a Best Of single CD with a Boxed Set to follow. There are TV specials being made by D.A.Pennebaker from leftover movie footage and new prints of the film have been released to cinemas. Even in the Woodstock region, new indie bands are being packaged as Alternative Woodstock. If New York’s Hudson Valley is the next breeding ground for alternative music, look
out for names like Abba Rage, Cellophane, Countless Others, Fierce Nipples, Go Van Go, Oblivion Grin, Peacebong, Conehead Buddha, Perfect Thyroid and Guys With Eyes.
Gilby Solo
Depending on what you read, Gilby Clarke is or is not, still the guitarist in Guns N Roses. Despite Los Angeles press and music biz talk that he’s “out” Clarke told RipitUp he’s still “in” but the band is not active at the moment. Clarke has released a solo project Pawnshop Guitars with guests including Frank
Black, Rob Affuso, Duff, Slash and Axl Rose. Covers include the Clash’s ‘Jail Guitar Doors’ and the Rolling Stones’ ‘Dead Flowers’.
Rickn’Roll
He may be behind bars right now but he can be in your home forever. Motown Records have just released Bustin’ Out (reviewed later this issue), the very best from the legendary Rick James. His biggest hits include ‘Super Freak', ‘Fire And Desire’ and the marijuana inspired ‘Mary Jane’. “Marijuana is the greatest thing since ice cream, I like to look at it like it’s a girl,” said James.
