This is one of the best releases to come out of the marshlands for a long time, hopefully it will be followed by another volume and perhaps a retro compilation. ' NATASHA GRIFFITHS WELLINGTON The ghost of Sesqui struck again at Labour weekend when the two day Waterfront show in Shed 26 had people staying away in droves. The organisers only made about a tenth of their break even point. The more imaginative Artzaid and Devotion shows did well appealing to a more upmarket scene ... all woman band Archie’s Aunt are out of the rehearsal room and gigging about town. Well worth catching . . . Emulsifier have finally finished recording their debut album in the depths of Radio NZ with new keyboard player Dr Afrik. The album will be out sometime this decade on Wildside ... ska band Skapa have completely re-recorded their album with a new guitarist. Also recording have been Let’s Planet and the Gardening Angels but neither bands have the bucks to complete mixing. The Warratahs held a benefit gig to help the Planets fund raising but short notice meant that much of the potential of the gig was lost. . . Inhalers vocalist Nigel Beckford has completed a solo album titled Weet-bix Emperor and has formed a new band Sven Olssen with Nick Sceats guitar, Janet Thompson guitar and John Fletcher bass/ keyboards and they will tour in the new year... seven piece Irish band Phelim were given a birthday cake by the Glass House to celebrate 50 gigs at Molly Malones bar. . . Funksters Bumpin’ Ugly reunited for a one-off Halloween gig at the Venue drawing back Jeremy Jones from the Leisure Suits. Arthur from Trasch, Gerald Tahu from Gifted and Brown, Peter Jamieson from Dr Versuvius and John Martin (Juan V) from Emulsifier complemented with a horn and string section . . . new band Salt Lick consists of Andrew Thomas, Phil Kelly, Campbell Reid, Rob Knobben and Kingsly Melhuish playing jazz tinged soul/ funk. New young blues outfit Lip Service (they're too young to remember the old one) are Clint and Gareth Meech and Lawrence Reid and they have a tidy eight track demo out. . . also out on tape is Cuba Street Dub, a six track tape collection with three tracks each from Sticks and Shanty and Alma's Rhythm Tracks. Red Mole have a new show together and after a local session will tour north ... Bob Cooper Grundy is back from the UK and playing his country blues around the cafes and streets again. The capital’s other great blues talent Dave Murphy is-, out of action after corrective surgery on the hand that was broken in a car accident earlier this year. . . Yas Deferens have their four track tape Luger Douche and the Roh Hei Hei Experience out finally after a launch at Stax, now called Stax again . . . Paisley Park has reopened upmarket as Kaminskys . . . the Brain Childs have been recording at their own studio and are shopping for a release deal. . . the Roots Foundation Sound System would be grateful for any information regarding the tossing of paint and theft of the theatre banner after their recent showcase at the Taki Rua Depot. The banner was painted by Aids victim Leigh Teirawhiti Ransfield to whom the Artzaid gig was dedicated. All concerned would be grateful if the 'tea leafs' would drop the banner back . .. Head Like A Hole have another of their limited edition t-shirts due soon so grab ’em while you can. LIVE ROCK High rating Hamilton radio station Rock 93FM have made a feature out of broadcasting live, in-studio bands for half hour sets. The station has presented the show over a dozen times to date and guests have included New Plymouth's Nod, Dead Flowers, Whisperscream and Blackjack. Rock 93M has a 20% NZ music policy. BEAT COES ON All NZ music show Counting The Beat will run another year with funding help from NZ On Air to the tune of $ 169,000 for another 50 episodes. The hour long show featuring new NZ music, interviews and news is broadcast on commercial radio stations around the country and the weekly audience is estimated at about 158,000. NZON AIRMUSIC VID FUNDINC Sixteen music videos will be funded by NZ On Air. Although the format is basic, for its S2O price tag, the info included is valuable and the transcript by Stellar Night Productions is an accurate, tidy edit of the day’s addresses, good questions and vital debate. Of particular note is the informative, very practical address on Song Publishing by lan James of Australia's Mushroom Music. James is very familiar with both sides of the Tasman due to Mushroom’s publishing of artists such as Push Push, These Wilding Ways and many of the Flying Nun artists. October in collision between his car travelling South and a van travelling North on the on the wrong side of the Southern Auckland motorway. The bassist was known for his work with the the Rodger Fox Big Band, his playing with international artists such as James Morrison, working in the Stanley's band with Peter Morgan, playing on albums by artists as varied as country's Patsy Rigger and funky Gotham City Express and for his teaching and inspiring many young players. Pearson formed the Power Band in 1987 to play his original compositions, recording a CD for Ode Records and winning Jazz Album of the Year in the 1990 NZ Music Awards. Artists appearing at the Gluepot tribute include Herbs, Midge Marsden, Rikki Morris, NZ Blues Brothers Revue, Rawiri Paratene, Hammond Gamble & Harry Lyon, Rodger Fox's Listen Up, Bunny Walters, Peter Morgan, Taisha, Hattie St.John and Tommy Adderley.
