DUNEDIN The Hail Dunedin Sunday rolled smoothly ■ without a hitch, all bands performed well enough to warrant complete filming. Particularly superb were Puddle, Peter Jefferies, My Deviant Daughter and Glovepuppet. Next marathon event is Operation Music Storm '92, 39 bands will play in the Dunedin heats throughout September with the semi-final featuring nine bands, three from each heat. Currently judges are more recognisable than most of the bands—for the final, Colin Hogg, Karyn Hay, Paul Rose and David Kilgour . . . two local high school bands, Miss Alice Dee and Hypose have songs on Radio One... Verlaine's have an additional guitarist as well as a new drummer. WELLINGTON : De Vox from Wellington High took out the local final fo the Smokefree Rockquest with r Pride N’Joy and Watch This Space runners up. The Soul Sisters took out best original set and presentation ... the local venues swings ■; and roundabouts have Reactor/ TVC closed, the former Carpark renamed the Venue, the stage moved to the opposite end at the Exchange, Stax became Ali Babas (the original name from the late 60s) for a few weeks then went back to Stax, the Southern Cross is undergoing major renovations that include removing ; the stage but redesigning the garden bar for entertainment and the part time Building full to overflowing for Head Like A Hole and Bailter Space... Bodega celebrated their first birthday with an all night bash with entertainment from the expanded Leisure Suits who have a great funky demo on Active at the moment. . . speaking of Active, the management buy-out of the station from the Vic Student’s Assn has gone through despite a last minute hitch that had the station taken off air briefly. The new . station (in ownership only) was launched by a massive “Meltdown" at Shed 11 that coincided with their nuclear ship visit promotion .: . . a lot of local punters none too happy with the switch of the Chili Peppers gig to the cavernous Show Buildings which has atrocious acoustics .. . new bar Loaded Hog will: . have the Pauas in residence . . . The first time it was screened it was not quite complete and Fane Flaws finished the the job for later screenings. Fane was also involved with the soundtrack for Brain Dead along with: Steve Hinderwell of the Gardening Angels and Inhalers. The project was produced by Peter Dasent... it must be spring in the air because studios and back rooms are alive with the sound of bands recording including the afore mentioned Gardening Angels as well as Desert Road, Boys of Bedlam, Let's Planet, Cool Disposition, Leisure Suits, Terry Casey (whose band the Shakedancers have split) and Darren Watson ' and his hot new band the Kings of Everything. Watson’s new band shows a change of direction from blues to rock under the influence of John Hiatt and Elvis Costellow. They have a residency at the Exchange ... the promising Bilge Festival have more material ready for release and out not is a four track tape by Two Persons Bodene recorded by Nigel Mitchell, Greg Goulding, Peter Holm and Caroline Estherguesting on drums... Goatrider have now expanded to a six piece and have more recording in the pipeline to follow up their earlier four track FTS . . . the opening of Molly Malone’s a few months back has seen a flourishing of Irish bands including Phelm Brady, Short People and the Potatos. The Potatos consist of Greg Pugh (ex Accelerants), Arron Watson (ex TAB), Rex Nairn (Wazzo Ghoti), Paul Avery and Jo Hanis. Nairn is also working with the resurrected Wazzo Ghoti with Steve Cochrane nowon drums. Cochrane used to run the now dormant Skank label in the late 80s and has plans for a new label . ..
