OUNDGARDEN Louder Than Live

(A&M Video) Although this is an album and a bass player old, it's still deserving of mention as ifs really quite good. Most of the vid is Soundgarden live in Britain, which has been filmed in a very arty .<■ black-and-white manner, with lots of • . hand-held camera and weird edits. This may annoy some people no end, it really doesn't bother me in the least, but ifs worth persevering with, as Soundgarden lay down a pretty * scorching performance culminating in a brilliantly noisey 'Big Bottom / . Earache My Eye' medley that sees a bass guitar die a violent death. (When this video was first released in the US you could enter a promotional contest, ' the prizes being chunks of the trashed bass. Certainly beats a cap and tour poster.) Add to all this the official video clips for 'Loud Love' and 'Hands All Over', which I'm sure were never seen on TV here, and ifs a nice little .-« package. Forget 'dated' and think 'history'. KIRK GEE - ROCK START Volume One (Stagedoor) An excellent beginners guide to basic axe-wielding. Professional guitar tutor Lemmy Atom (yes, he has a bit of a sense of humour) opens his video with a personal endorsement from Shane Silver from Push Push. This 55-minute, step-by-step video starts with guitar tuning techniques before demonstrating the A, E and D chords. Chord boxes pop up on screen enabling you to work out the finger formations whilst strumming along to Who Do You Love' with Lemmy's backing band. He demonstrates strumming and picking, barre chords, slide guitar and rock and blues song basics (you also learn the G and C and E, A and D minor chords). Easy to follow, plenty of strum-along opportunities, and you can rewind to your heart's content. Look forward to number two in the series where ■ Lemmy 'cuts loose' with more advanced Lead Rock Guitar techniques. Recommeneded retail price $39.95. DONNA YUZWALK

We apologise to readers who were looking forward last month to Pump Up D'Angelo and didn't get it. When we recieved the column we didn't get it either. Nick mailed it to us from Wellington (he's currently hitch-holidaying around NZ), but we thought he'd got his envelopes

mixed up and decided it would be too cruel to print what he sent us. That was a month ago and since we haven't recieved this month's column either (honest Nick, it was lost in the mail, we never receieved it, we swear) we'll just have to run what we've got. Heh, heh, heh.
