AUCKLAND Fatal Jelly Space are back on stage on October 18th at the Gluepot with new member Sue Crengle on keyboards. The band have just completed a video for 'Aliens' which will be screened on Nightline on Thursday the 17th, TVFM having turned down the chance to screen it because its "too radical". Also, expect a Fatal Jelly Space album in early '92 .... whoops wrong again! Palmerston North's irrepressible Lung are releasing their second album Cacti on November 13th independently, rather than thru Flying Nun as originally planned. They should also be supporting SPUD at their release party this month. far all are rumoured to be showing interest in local bands. And local bands have rushed to enter the War of the Bands after a few cancellations, 30 are now battling towards the final on Labour Day. Geronimo Recording Studio are presently arranging a distribution deal fortheir label... Stepford Five are now four with Stephanie Mitchell joining on bass. Celia Pavlova could be moving north which will mean fewer Stepford gigs.. . Hammerack are looking at recording an album now they have finished at the Playroom whilst ex-Hammerack Kevin Emmett's new band Baby's On Fire are due to debut with a single soon in shops. The Bats' are off to Australia to promote their new single 'Boogie Man', this month. History On The Walls is a limited history of New Zealand band posters at Exposure Gallery, 223 High Street, running for most of this month. New bands around include the Masons, Extremely Dog, 147 Swordfish and About Change. Seems Onset Offset may have an overseas deal for several of their early albums. JOHN GREENFIELD WELLINGTON Expansions at the Carpark will see a new back bar, the Exchange, enlarged toilets and the Outer Limits Club starting . again on Thursdays, one Tuesday a month set aside for new bands and rock and roll nights on Wednesdays. The Sol Mardi Gras at the St James featured new bands Toro Loco, Sol Latina as well as Salas Picante and Kantuta pushing the Latin revival... the Warratahs are in Oz promoting the release of their material across the Tasman and the/re still waiting to hear whether they will play the Highway W>men tour. Recent local gigs have • debuted a wealth of new material and the release of Barry Saunders solo outing has been put back to next year. David Greer is in Frontier recording an album with local musos Barbra Griffin, Dave Don, lan James and Martin Durrant for a new year release. Greer is working solo up to seven nights a week to fund the project... power metal merchants Deliverance are now a four piece and playing all original material... new four piece Fin Fish features ex-Backdoor Blues Band guitarist Bernie Mesmer. Wall of Surf have been recording at Writhe with Nick Roughan and at Marmalade with Tim Farrant for a QEII grant application... Phelim Brady are playing regularly at the new Glass House to support their Irish theme. The first Metal Daze gig at the Empire Warehouse attracted 200 punters and one of the highlights was new band Sacrament with a great singer and the Electric Mayhem 111 at the Carpark - featured eleven bands over twelve hours proving that metal and hard rock is alive and kicking. A new Sticks and Shanty album is in the pipeline from Jayrem and Jim Moss is looking at a compilation of local bands, including the various offshoots of the 6 Volts... Harry Death have a six year live retrospective tape out called Like Warmed Up Death and are looking at a 10" release. They play instore at Ima Hitt's new shop in New Plymouth on the 19th... new old band Too Stuffed To Jump 7 made up of veterans of local 60s bands have their first public gig at the Cambridge on the 18th ... Daddyo have a single 'Born to Rock and Roll' getting a fair amount of FM radio play... Paddy Morgan has started a company called Really Big Records with the first release being an EP from his own band Amazing Broccoli. A compilation of Wgtn bands is also planned. Active have also been compiling the NZ Music News for student radio syndication with funding from NZ On Air. JOHN PILLEY DUNEDIN The Flying Nun Party was held last month, attracting a near capacity crowd to Sammy's helped by over 100 names on the doorlist. It's a pity that room on the list couldn't be found for David Pine (of Sneaky Feelings), he having recorded three albums, three singles and half an EP with the label. For David and the others of you that weren't there you missed a "boomer" (incidentally the name of the varsity literary review — out now) of a night. Shayne Carter putting in a great performance, as did Bob Scott, David Kilgour, and Alan Haig as the three of them pretended to be something they weren't, in a set which included the ' world's most infamous SSO single. Sadly the Puddle put in a shocker, but Roger Shepherd was so impressed he's given them the go ahead for an EP, now we've just got to wait for the live album and the studio the album the Puddle have already done... the Verlaines, a surprise ommission from the FN Birthday Party (and who said music in this town wasn't political) have their first album for Slash, released Stateside in mid-November,

local release probably next year. Three weeks later than their former label mates, the Verlaines played Sammy's with Krishna Pillai (ex Drop and Sferic Experiment) guesting on keyboards for three songs, including, you guessed it, 'Death And The Maiden'. Also feeling nostalgic recently has been Glove Puppet Stephen Steadman who has reformed mid-eighties local faves Inner Circle... in the wake of the Das Phaedrus split, Andrew Spittle is playing solo, Victor Billot is concentrating on becoming the next David Eggleton as well as managing My Deviant Daughter, and Piers Graham is in practicing with various local musicians. Gaylene, performance poet extraordinaire, is leaving Dunedin sometime soon, so far she has done 16 "last performances"... Gary Muir's other commitments have forced him to leave Cynthia Should. Manic Pop Thrill have gone into recess... Russell Scoones has left percussion duo Smith v Smith.. . the Bats next single 'Boogie Man' will not be coming out on vinyl... the 3Ds will tour the United States at the beginning of next year, their debut album, Hellsapoppin will be released locally in February... February is also now the

release date for David Kilgour's album... Solid Cold Hits, the unfortunately named Radio One compilation album will now be released on Pagan next year. At this stage only two of the bands on it have split up, but we've got to get through the summer holidays yet.
