Rumours

Augustus Gussie Clark and 'Not On My Own' with a superior lovers sound. The A-side isn't one of my favourites or at least it wasn't until this remix, still not sold on that Jazzie B sound. But I like his

production on other people's stuff. Maybe it's just that peace to the world schtick that leaves me a little quesy.

CURTIS MAYFIELD AND ICE-T Superfly 990 (Capitol) 12" Ice-T opens with his best Lighting 'Hustlers Convention' Rod voice, then Curtis with that sweet vocal. If you have seen Rudy Ray Moore's 'Dolemite' you might get to like this better. But you can't not like that spare Mantronix mix or even the busier fly mix. Sort of wish there wasn't an attempt ata new Jack swing thing. Oh well, still worth getting. SIRMIX-A-LOT Iron Man (Nasty Mix) 12" Bit late to release this, it's the style that is to blame, the heavy beat with the Metal Church guitar boy cranking it up just don't cut it anymore. It might be one of Ozzy Osbourne's greatest triumphs but you wouldn't pick it from this thing.

THE CRAMPS Creature From The Black Leather Lagoon (Enigma) 12"

"I'm a chicken fried fire eatin' son of a gun / conceived by my devil daddy on a

chicken run"... you tell 'em Lux. The Cramps always deliver the goods, hard rockin tunes from rockabilly heaven. The image of crazed people is important, but just as important is Ivy's guitar playing which echoes all the greats of the devil's music, people like Johnny Burnette's Paul Burlison and Elvis' Scotty Moore. All the elements are in play. Two songs on the flip just sizzle as well, the King's 'Jailhouse Rock' and their own 'Beat Out My Love'. Wild beyond belief. AFTERSHOCK Always Thinking (Virgin) 12" Bit faceless, this one, almost a funk by numbers, the voices just let it down. Oh wait a minute, my bulldog has come in chewing a Datura plant, could be dangerous. He might start hallucinating and attack my Stamp magazine -collection orsomething. Oh no, he's gone to sleep, might have been this record. MOVEMENT 98 (featuring Carroll Thompson) Sunrise (Circa) 12" The Satori mix begins real well, in a raggamuffin boast, then dissolves into Ms Thompson doing the soul diva and Davis Oakenfold and Osborne trying a Sly and Robbie mix. Sort of reminds me of Grace Jones in that quirky reggae style. It takes a few listens until it hits, pity the lyrics are so wet.

BRUCE DICKINSON All The Young Dudes (EMI) 7" Ah, yes, the thinking man's heavy metal master trys his hand at a revival of Mottthe Hoople I Bowie's glam anthem. Something doesn't quite hit high gear, but flip it over for one of those deep folkie things called 'Darkness Be My Friend'. Me, I liked that'Number of the Beast'thing much better.

THE VAUGHAN BROTHERS Tick Tock (CBS) 7" Great album that Family Style, lots of Southern funk mixed with the blues elements. The late Stevie Ray and brother Jimmie get close on this ballad about time and love. There are better things on the album but not thisjntimate. ARCHIE ROACH

Took The Children Away (Auroa)7" ■ it The Australian government following the ethics of capitalism attempted quick assimilation/ destruction of its colonised native people. Taking their children

and placing them in foster homes, taking their culture, making them nice and white. It's safer that way. Archie Roach tells the story in an emotive

voice, I don't expect it to be taken to your collective breast, but have a listen.

PRINCE New Power Generation (Paisley Park) 7" It's a tired groove they're swimming in here, like how many times have you heard Prince doing things like this. Almost saved by that chicken scratch guitar line and the rap on the second side but I think it's a bit mundane for a man of his great talents.

KERRY BUCHANAN

WELLINGTON Sean Murrie is rumoured to be relocating his Carpark Club to the Barrets pub site in Willis St, hopefully soon as Paisley Park is reverting to a cabaret and function r00m... the Empire Warehouse in HopperSt is holding regular gigs butwatch the stairs... there are also rumours of a big New Year's Eve party called Acid Rain at the Overseas

Terminal. Hopefully not another case of Aucklanders in forthe money and off.

AlO track release by whizz kid Peter Jamieson and he threatens more.. . To The Earth's Core have recorded three tracks at new studio Mediate Music in Taranaki St and will complete an album this year. Disraeli Gears have recorded four tracks at Golden Horn produced by Paul Lloyd that showa change of direction in the band with the inclusion of violin from Liz Marton. The Warratahs were swanning off to Noumea, not New Caledonia, as mentioned last month. This month they have been off to Bangkok opening Air NZ's new route but the food in Singapore didn't agree with them and on their return they had to can their Film Awards gig because of ill health. JOHNPILLEY AUCKLAND Be there or be square time. The Straitjacket Fits played a pre-tour showcase set at Scruff's Place to an invitation only audience of musos and

media. Hard to see the band through the red and green lighting, but they played Melt, plus earlier stuff, to a discerning audience. In attendance, Roland Hallelujah Picasso, various Headless

Chickens, Straw People, Barbara from Fatal Jelly Space and Matthew from

S.P.U.D., Push Push etc etc. Rumblefish (who have a new drummer, ace skin pounder Mike Burrows from Rhythm Cage) are gearing up to do a fourtrack demo at Last Laugh studios. There's also talk of them doing a joint EP with good friends and fellow long hairs Freak Power who have just scored the support slot with US Sub-Pop stars Mudhoney in December. Freak Power flatmates S.P.U.D. will be sharing the support bill. Meanwhile, Honeylove are teenage and proud with their 1 5 yearold male go-go dancerand 16 year old female keyboardist. They can also boast Paul Hubbard (Compulsory Joy) on guitar, and lead vocals shared between a junior Elvira in black vinyl and irrepressible eighteen yearold dyed red head Warren. They are, at the very least, very watchable. Popular bluesman Midge Marsden has just finished recording a self-financed album at Air Force, mixed at Rich in Sydney, due for February release. Meantime, Midge is touring the nation until the end of February. DONNA YUZWALK CHRISTCHURCH The Palladium has given up on its alternative Sunday gigs afterfive months. With an interesting variety of local and touring bands playing there to varying audiences the management decided it was safer to stick with the regular disco... and after a poor start it appears the New Casino Night Club has closed completely only a few months after opening. While the venue situation gets worse bands are still busy recording... the Axel Grinders have theirfirstsingle released on Dionysis Records. 'Aparatus of Love' already has a cult appeal in the States and hopefully will be available here on import. Watch out forthe Axel's appearing in Dunedin this month and in the North Island during December... the Big White Undie Band have released a cassingle and Pretty Wicked Head and the Desperate Men have formed their own record company, Oreti Records, with the first release being the band's 11 track tape 'New Age Savage'.

Young three piece Roadhouse have been gaining a strong following at the Valley Inn. They have also just demoed three promising rock originals... seems Greenhouz Effect had a short residency at the Blenheim Road Hotel that resulted in at least one member departing on less than pleasant terms. A minor poster war erupted recently resulting in at least one city councillor spending his spare time running around with a scrapper and several people wondering why they couldn't see many posters. Has Celia Pavlova joined Hamish Kilgour's Playground? And what has happened to the Prodigies? J. GREENFIELD

DUNEDIN The 3Ds have found themselves a new bassist, Rachel King (ex Cake Kitchen). Practices should be happening soon when. Rachel (with a silent D) moves to Dunedin.. . Glove Puppet, who are now starting to sound more like they want (ie they're dirtying theirsound) are looking for an extra guitaristto complement this change (phone Stephen on 4679925)... Richard Wallis is back in town and has reformed Gamaunche with Gareth Rees. Selected shows is the plan, plus the release early next year of new recordings and old material back to 1981.
