He's the king of the bang bang you're dead style of rap, aman witha message, which s, if you're a black man it's time to seize what's yours and get outta thatjungle. Taken from his most minimal and conceptual album to date Am / Black Enough For You. The B-side has this great Malcolm X sample about the “common enemy”. Like Eazy-E, he sure ain'tno role model for the faint-hearted. LISA STANSFIELD All Around The World (Arista) 12“ Another big English hitin the House tradition, but miles ahead of all that black box and pumping jelly stuff. She sang with Cold Cut (‘People Hold On’) but scores the big soul points with this retro-70s soul : shiffer. If's gotthe bass /synth lines beloved of the new soul to soul generation, and also avery fine production in the Gamble and Huff mode. | likeitalot. : THEBLOWMONKEYS Slaves No More (RCA) 12” Drßobertis really into this soul thing with this groovy ode to black liberation. Guest singer Syliva Tella takes the real vocal creditand it's got the now-usual 70s feel plus a rousing sample about the ongoing struggle against white oppression. But remember kids, when you're smashing the state, keep a smile on yourface. JODY WATLEY . Everything (MCA) 12” Bit of a disappointment from Ms Watley. The song is just okay, so a better production might have beefed it up. Very short mix fora 12” includes ‘For The Girls’, from her earlier album. ' QUINCY JONES with RAY CHARLES & CHAKA KHAN I'liße Good To You (Qwest) 7* Thisis real good. Thatfine Quincy production with a beat that cooks and Ray “The Genius” Charles getting smooth with Chaka. It's interesting to hear Ray in this modern context, the beats don’tdefeat - himatall, it's just great funk. The new Quincy album features Ice-T, Big Daddy Kane and other fun lovers, so check that one out, butdon'tbother aboutyoung Mike Jackson’s new album because Quincy has been relieved of his production duties. Maybe Mike has got Kenny Rogers to do it or something. MILLI VANILLI s i Girl 'm Gonna Miss You (RCA) l 21l « 2llove pop music, it's so good to see that Boney M are still around to excite us. Because this is sure the new Boney M. Rob and Fab might be dancin’ and vocalising, butthe famous Frank Farian is behind the mixing desk, known once for being the fifth member of Boney M, now the third Milli Vanilli. This is a remix of the ballad and sounds terrible. | reckon they should do ‘Brown Girl In The Ring’, that would be real good. DEBORAH HARRY I Want That Man (Chrysalis) 7 Written and produced by the Thompson Twins, pity about that. The flip side is better, done by Mike Chapman, andisloud and poppy. This is Ms Debbie's third comeback, somehow | feel it might be back to the drawing board. BELINDA CARLISLE Leave A lLightOn (Virgin)7” I reckon-Ms Carlisly really wanted to be inthe Mamas & The Papas, that old Californian sound of happy people getting asuntan. Ms Carlisle has a good sun tan, on the cover she comes on sorta like natural, no preservatives used. However the song might need a few extra things pumped into it, like that guitar break needs vitamins. This one’s gonna be big in Takapuna. POPWILLEATITSELF Very Metal Noise Pollution (RCA) 71l Afour-tracker reflecting the many sides of this sensitive English band. You've heard itall before, kids, yet another version of ‘Def Con One’, with bits of the Twilight Zone. Somehow | think they are the 80s *binswer to Hawkwind, and they should cover ‘Silver Machine.’ ' JANETJACKSON e Rhythm Nation (A&M) 12“ Okay, I've figured it out, the new album is a concept album (like Jethro Tull or something) about people finding freedom indance. Yep, workers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose, the world is like a long version of Fame, just dance and be
happy. | really don't think this album is anywhere near as good as Confrol, that had better beats and no overwrought ideology.
RUTHJOY 5 Don’t Push It (MCA) 12“ No real heavy message here butit's a better dance record. Maybe alittle left of field for some because what makesita killer is the production from Mantronix. Lots of scratches, squeals and B-boy beats. Like Lisa Stansfield, it climbed the English - club and pop charts, and has that , distinctive sound. Mantronixis real good with beat ballads (like his work with Joyce Sims) makes everything sound full and happening. - ] TAYLORDANE With Every Beat Of My Heart (Arista) 12 An Australian friend wanted to go to the movies and see this thing called Bifches. Sounded good to me, but | should;ve realised something was wrong when Bette Midler came on. The whole thing was like a long episode of thirtysomething. The Australian accentis not a very accurate one. Anyhow, | left the movies, puta tape of this on in the car and the world felt good again. Ms Dayne has gone Latino on this one, and it's super groovy. - ADEVA Warning (Cooltempo) 12” Like House music leaves me a bit cold. D-Mob and Adeva are exceptions,good nasty soul from Ms Adeva. You get three mixes on this 127, the firstis just beats and pieces, but the album mixhas great vocals. KOOLMOEDEE They Want Money (Jive) 12” It's the Kool One escaping from romance with strings attached. Like he reckons every one is just after him for his money, who knows, he might be right. The groove is a bitlight with a slight swing beat feel. Better tracks on the album. ; THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN Head On (Blanco Y Negro) 7 Another great single, somehow it reminds me of the Beach Boys' ‘Do It Again’, same sort of feel. I've always liked JMC because they have a good sense of pop history, always use neat guitar lines and then there’s the emotional range of the vocals. From the beat crazy Automatic album. .
