Enzed Grooves
THEPORTAGE 13; 13EP (Valise) : ' Lawrence Kennett was responsible forthe Nux Vomica TV Producer’ single thatfloated practically unnoticed around South Island sale bins about three years ago. He recorded this 13:13 EP with Lisa Preston in Dunedin almost two years ago (since then, the Portage have become an “actual band” and
apparently have plans fo record as such). When I first heard this, | hated it; but now that circumstances have forced me into listening to it on alow-tech machine, barely passing for “sterec”, its like-minded recording sensibilifies (“made in abysmal conditions, studio no" says the cover) make more sense than before. Side one veers almost Can-wards with ‘Swamp Dream’ and the bleak, barely articulate enunciations of the ‘Sin’, Withdrawal’, ‘Addiction’ triad make for desperate, murky statements of justification. I'm not really keen on
the drug overtones, but atleast, so far as| cantell, they're not glorifying hard drugs, Spaceman 3 style. Available from 15 Brook St, Dunedin; listento it underwater. PAUL McKESSAR
