A Heavy Rock Peace Summit?
The massive Moscow Music Peace concert organised by Bon Jovimanagers, McGhee Entertainment, got an audience 0f 90,000 in Lenin Stadium but caused friction resulting inmanagement partner Doug Thaler walking out with Motley Crue. Tempers flared whenthe Crue, whowere not allowedtouse pyro, found headliners Bon Joviwereusing every special effect. As Bon Jovi'sfireworks went off, backstage Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee
exploded and hit organiser / manager Doc McGhee.
The Crue were also miffed by Ozzy Oshourne (the act with the biggest followinginthe USSR) arriving in Moscow and insisting on second billing. Thaler has now formed a separate companyto manage Motley Crue but Scorpions and Skid Row have stayed with McGhee.
“Who are Skid Road?” said one Russian metalfan. Skid Row singer, Sebastian Bach, hadto work hard at his bad-boy image to make the band known —atthe press conference he wore at-shirtshowinga variety of sexual positions, moonedtwo policemen and called Billy Joel “awimp.” The 16,000 tons of gearto stage the show was trucked into Russia by 49 tractor
trailersandthe bands flewinby a chartered Boeing 757. The 646 foreigners werefed by aLondon caferer but : musicians grumbled about jetlag, shabby hotels (including the lack of working electrical outlets for hair dryers) and tight promotional schedules.
