Calling All Bands

Searching for bands this month are the Battle of the Bands, the Rheineck Rock Award, and for next year's Orientation'tours, the Students' Arts Council. Already nearly 200 entries have been received for the Rheineck Rock Award. It’s worth $60,000, with half the money going towards recording an album, and the other half for a tour to support the album. Any New Zealand groups or individuals can apply for the awards,

even those who have’recorded before. The Battle of the Bands kicks off in Dunedin October 8. For the winners there’s a prize package worth SBO,OOO, which goes towards recording a single, making a video, and $40,000 for a nationwide tour. It's for “all original NZ bands who don’t have a signed recording or management contract." Entries must be in 10 days before the local heats (see the Coruba Calendar for the date of your town’s heat). The final will be held at the Galaxy November 1. For more details, contact New Music Management, PO Box 5564, Auckland 1, or phone (09) 797-784. The booking conference at which the Students' Arts Council decides which acts will tbur at next year’s Orientation takes place on November 16 and 17. The Orientation tours take place from midFebruary to mid-March next year, and provide great exposure. They’re interested in all types of acts: bands, solo, mime, theatre, etc. To be considered, you must submit by October 23 a press kit with any posters, video, press clippings, tapes, and so on, to the Students Arts Council, PO Box 9266, Wellington.
