Dunedin The Netherworld Dancing Toys have a new single, The Trusted Ones'/'Bored To Death', out on Flying Nun at the beginning of August. Trombonist Philip Hurring is leaving at the end of the year so the band is looking for a new horn player. They are also doing live dates in Auckland and Hamilton during August. See Coruba Calendar. The Tunnel Wives are to tour Southland. Blue Murder have a new drummer, ex Knobz Bob Reid. Ex Nerve (Steve Connelly) ex Stallion (Giang Nguyen) and ex Prowler (Alistair Penrose) along with newcomer make up new band Straight Lace. New look Foreign Agent have returned simply as the Agents. The Shorelines new Regines bar should provide live work for local bands once the initial promotion and "overseas band" attraction dies down.

ChCh Battle of the Bands is on again during the first two weeks of August. First prize is SIOOO cash and two days recording in 3ZM's studio. Runner-up gets same studio time and SSOO. Also a special prize for Most Original Band of time at Harlequin Studios and two weeks of major gigs in Auckland. Organiser Michael Gonzevekes wishes to hear from interested bands, ph 69-383. He is also looking for acts to play the Gladstone early week. White Boys, new band for Mark Brooks (ex Vauxhalls, Newtones), will soon be doing early weeks at Gladstone .:. Midge Marsden's Jumpers will hit the Glad midAugust ... They Were Expendable and Not Really Anything set off soon on Southerly Change tour. NRA will use Expendables' Robert as second drummer on tour. Expendables will also do a quick tour of major centres when their Big Strain six-song EP is released early August. NILA plan a live 12" of two songs recorded at the Gladstone.

Mainly Spaniards have new single ... expect Ballon D'essai EP shortly ... Cleano Productions have a posthumous, 20-track, C9O Oddities, featuring bits of Clean stuff from 79- thru Flying Nun ... Yen have gone back into hibernation and are writing new material.

ChCh's most independent cinema, the Academy, will feature The Rocky Horror Picture Show every Fri/Sat night at 11.30 pm. Prizes for costumes, etc, water pistols and rice welcome. Hillsborough was able to rescind loss of entertainment licence at last moment but touring bands will now be put into Gladstone. Cover

bands Moose Boots, etc to be swapped from Star and Garter to Hillsborough for trial six weeks or so, door charge to be artificially low ... national tour by ECE has been postponed with their vocaflist otherwise disposed. Auckland . The tapes from the Mainstreet Fall gig are apparently at last to make vinyl. By agreement with the band, a live album, entitled Fall In A Hole, and possibly a 12" 45 will be pressed. The same persons seem likely to do something similar with tapes from the recent Birthday Party tour ... Dave McArtney has just begun work on a new solo album .at Harlequin. Overseas response to demo tapes has already been encouraging and McArtney plans to play live later with a pick-up group under the Flamingos banner ... new Narcs single will be 'Look the Other Way'. Recorded at Harlequin, it's the first digitallyrecorded single in NZ. Keyboardist Liam Ryan is now a permanent member, of the band. Live EP of DD Smash at Mainstreet July 28, 29 will be out early August. :RWP TV special will screen on August 27 and will also feature Hip Singles, for whom a live mini-LP is also planned ... Dance Exponents album recently completed at Mandrill Studios is being mixed in Australia at present. Expected release is in Sept/Oct. Flying Nun. ... contrary to rumour, Christchurch's Wastrels have not split up but have been spending time off the road writing. A five song EP recorded at Harlequin will be out on Hit Singles next month, to be-followed up by a single of new ‘material. The band undertakes a schools tour in July and then a major tour North to become resident in Auckland. New Grammar Boys single is 'Don't Know You'. The 12" will be an extended version with 'World of Our Own' on the flip ... Auckland Walk are now practising with former Blond Comedy guitarist Damian Saunders. Childrens Hour have recorded a five track EP and This Sporting Life have recorded a single at Progressive Studios. In the same studio the Henchmen are recording an album and Eight . Living Legs an EP ... Silent Decree release a cassette EP In Loving Memory on their own Sanctus Decay label. Available at present from Bluebeat or Marcus' Clothes shop and soon by mail order. Costs $4 and it too was recorded at Progressive. Daggy and the Dickheads are now simply the Dickheads. Wellington From July 4, Access Radio (783 <hz) will run the NZ Green Music Show every Monday from spm to 3pm. Only contemporary NZ music, with the emphasis, on previously unaired music, will be played by DJs Bryan Staff and John Barry. The show will also include a gig guide, interviews, etc. Radio NZ is offering its recording facilities free to bands for, one-off recording in return for a 30-minute programme of the

band's music and ideas. Contact Access Radio at 721-777. Norrie Gibson and July WebbPullman are compiling a National Directory of Alternative Performing Arts detailing the policies, resources and requirements of individuals/groups working outside the mainstream (including composers, musicians, puppeteers, street performers, etc). Technical data on performance venues throughout the country theatres, halls, galleries and outdoor facilities will also be included. The completed booklet will be a useful guide for artists/programme planners alike and will assist the latter in contacting performing artists within and beyond their local district.
