Strength of New Zealand Timbers

The weight given is for thoroughly dried specimens. The last column gives the allowable value (taking a factor of safety =8) of “S” in the formula: M = Sbd J where M = bending moment in inch-pounds, b = breadth of beam in inches, d== depth of beam in inches. There is no uniform practice in naming BIRCHES and PINES in various districts. The botanical name is the only safe guide.
