Tank Pipes. With the delivery pipe entering at the top-of receiving tank, the duty of the pump would be constant, because the water has always to be lifted to the same level, whereas if the pipe is connected to the bottom of the tank the duty of the pump will vary according to the height of water in the receiving tank. On the average, therefore, the duty will be less than in the case where the water is delivered into the top of the tank. This is accounted for by the fact that the pressure of water varies directly with the head, i.e., depth or height. The quantity of water stored does not affect the head. —E. W. Hursthouse.
