GISBORNE NOTES
(From our own correspondent.) ' - ' September 28. Rev. Fathers Hickson and O’Leary, Marist Missioners, have arrived in Gisborne, and will conduct a mission in this parish. Mr. A. J. Muller, the Chief Postmaster at Gisborne, has been lying seriously ill at a. private hospital since last Friday. A slight change for the better was reported today, and it is sincerely hoped the improvement will continue. A large gathering of parishioners of the Patutahi, Ngatapa, and Te Arai portions of the Ormond parish met at the presbytery on Tuesday evening to bid farewell to Rev. Father Farragher, who has been transferred to „ Waiuku. Mr. Owen Gallagher, on behalf' of the parishioners, eulogised the work of Father Farragher in this large and scattered district and asked him to accept with their best wishes a r ell filled purse. Father Farragher feelingly responded, and thanked them for their good wishes and generous present.
Rangiora Celtic Club The weekly meeting of the above club was held in the Catholic schoolroom on Monday evening, the Ist inst., when there was an attendance of about fifty members, presided over by Mr. 0. Dash. The evening’s programme was a debate, the subject being “That the Government immigration policy is beneficial to New Zealand.” The affirmative leader was Rev. Father O’Doherty, who was supported by Mr. L. Hunt, and the negative ‘ leader Mr. C. M. Reidy, supported by Mr. H. Haughey. All the speakers were in splendid form and kept their audience interested. On a show of hands, the negative supporters were declared the winners. The club’s fortnightly progressive euchre and dance was held in the Oddfellows Hall on the previous Saturday evening, the euchre prizes being won by Miss EHie Brady (ladies) and Mr. T. D. Henderson (gents).
