DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

(From our own correspondent.) November 20. The chief topic of conversation during the past week has been the astonishing financial result of the Auckland queen carnival. Although all returns are not yet in, the sum of nearly £15,000 is at hand. Great excitement prevailed during last week end, when final efforts were made .

to catch votes for the queen candidates. The Town Hall was so crowded on Saturday night, when the drawing of the art union took place, that to move about was quite impossible. At 3 p.m. on Monday, the executive of the carnival met at the Bishop’s Palace, Ponsonby, his Lordship the Bishop presiding. When each parish priest had disclosed his bank receipts, the winning candidate was found to be Miss Erina O’Connor, who represents St. Patrick’s Cathedral parish. Miss O’Connor received 502,467 votes; Miss Grevatt (Ponsonby’s queen), 241,063; - Miss Rawson (St. Benedict’s queen), 229,819; Miss Sinclair (Grey Lynn’s queen). 93,086; Miss Farrelly (queen of Remuera), 54,452; and Miss Connie O’Keefe (queen of the Hostel), 50,800 votes; thus representing a money value of £14,646 Is lid. Rev. Father Fordo, Adm., was warmly congratulated by the Bishop and his fellow-priests on the very handsome result in favor of St. Patrick’s queen. The coronation ceremony, under the direction of Mr. Owen Cardston, is to take place in the largo Town Hall on Monday, November 29, and for it a grand concert has been arranged by Mr. Leo "Whittaker, A.T.C.L., conductor of St. Patrick’s Cathedral Choir. The box plan is already filled, and a crowded house is thus assured. Rev. Father Bradley, of the Cathedral staff, is at present relieving at To Arch a for Very Rev. Dean McGuinness, who is visiting Gisborne.

Taumarunui fFrora our own correspondent.) November 25. “Surprise Packet Day,” which was held last Saturday in aid of the Town and Public Service queen’s candidature, was so successful that the committee have decided to arrange another for Saturday week. All the ■ prizes ■ were given, and a shop was kindly lent by Mr. McKenzie for the day. The “Sporting Pierrots’ ’made their first appearance in the Theatre Royal last evening in aid of the Sports queen. These young people have been practising regularly for some time past, and their efforts were certainly crowned with success, every item being thoroughly enjoyed. On Friday evening a children’s fancy dress social, arranged by the Town and Public Service queen committee, is to bo held. Tickets are selling well, and the children are very excited. Given a fine night this function should prove a great success. . A social in aid of the country queen is .to be held at Owhango on Saturday evening, and another in Taumarunui on Wednesday evening. Rev. Father Langerworf, of Tokaanu, paid a short visit to Taumarunui recently.
