(From our own correspondent.) November 22. 1 lie garden fete promoted to aid in liquidating the debt on the Catholic Girls’ Hostel was held on Saturday afternoon and evening. Mr. T. Cahill (organising secretary) and his committee carried out the arrangements excellently. Stalls were conducted by Mesdames Walter Clifford, J. S. Barrett, G. Harper, G. Dobbs, and W. Hayward. The matron (Miss Beveridge), assisted by Miss B. holey and Nurse Donohue, attended Ho the refreshment stall, and ill's. Blackaby the ice cream stall. Derry’s Baud supplied much appreciated music. The electric light arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Cotter and Co. At the i clock Mass in the Cathedral on Sunday morning, some 90 children made their First Holy Communion, in the presence of a very large congregation. Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy, Adm., was celebrant, Father Bonetto assisting at the Communion. After the 11 o’clock Mass his Lordship the Bishop confirmed 125 adults, and delivered an impressive address on the importance and significance of the Sacrament of Confirmation. St. Mary's Tennis Club opened its season on Saturday afternoon in the presence of a large gathering of friends and players. Very Rev. Dean Regnault, S.M,. and Fathers Seymour, S.M., and Stewart, S.M., were in attendance. Afternoon, tea was dispensed on the lawn. With representatives from the Cathedral and Upper Riccarton Clubs competitive games were played. The outlook for St. Alary’s Club this season is a very hopeful one. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of St. Patrick’s branch of the Hibernian Socity was held in the Hibernian Hall on Monday, evening, November 15. Bro. L. J. Courtney, 8.P., presided .over a full roll of officers and a good attendance of members. Three new members were initiated, and two nominations received. Following its customary annual practice, the branch has secured gold crosses, and medals for presentation to the Catholic schools at Woolston, Addington, and Halswcll. as well as St. Mary’s Convent, Cathedral Convent, and Marist Brothers’ Schools. Bro. J. McCormick, P.P., reported 'having attended the IJ.F.S. Benevolent Association’s meeting, . at which £2O was voted to relieve a case of distress. Sick allowance (£ls 6s Sd) and accounts (£22 Is 6d) were passed for payment.

Messrs. S. Wilson and R. Menzies, representing -the Canterbury Rugby, Union, and Mr. J. E. Maxwell, secretary* Public Schools’ Athletic Association, recently visited the Marist Brothers’ School for the purpose of presenting the two shields won by the boys during the football season. They were cordially welcomed by the Director (Rev. Brother Justin), after which the boys sang football choruses. Mr. Wilson complimented the lads on their singing. In presenting the senior championship shield to Master J. Amos (senior captain),. Mr. Wilson referred to the fine performance put up by the school, and said he hoped to see many of the boys in the future hold representative honors. The lightweights champions’ captain (Master Jack Mannix), was then handed the shield for his team, Messrs. Menzies and Maxwell supplementing the remarks of Mr. Wilson. Rev. Brother Phelan, on behalf of the boys, thanked the visitors for coming to the school and for the encouraging words given the young players. He emphasised the fact that whilst the boys had been enthusiastic in playing the game they had also been asiduous in their school work.

Addington Final arrangements have been made for the garden fete which is to be held at Nazareth House farm, at Middleton, on Saturday, December 4. The object of the fete is to reduce the debt on the new presbytery. Sub-committees have been formed to carry out the arrangements for the sports, which are to commence at 1 p.m. The items are many and varied, including boxing exhibitions, coursing, racing, tug-of-war, baby show, dancing, etc. Given a fine day success is ensured. An earnest appeal is made to all city friends outside the parish to help by their presence. The beautiful grounds selected for the outing are ideal for a picnic. Timaru s (From our own correspondent.) November 22. The devotion of the Forty Hours’ Adoration was observed in Timaru at the beginning of the week, starting at last Mass on Sunday. Sunday also brought to a close a most successful retreat, conducted by Rev. Father A .Herring, S.M., for the sodality of the Children of' Mary and the Society of the Sacred Heart. All the exercises were well attended, and large numbers approached the Holy 'Cable every morning. At the close of the retreat on Sunday evening, Father erring preached to a very large congregation on the Most Blessed Sacrament, and this was followed by the Papal Blessing. A visible result of the work accomplished by Father Herring is a marked increase in the membership of both societies taking part in the retreat. Qrey mouth (From our own correspondent.) November 19. The Sisters of Mercy have furnished yet another* reason for gratification among their friends —and that means everybody. Last week, the Trinity College Music Examinations put before the public in a most favorable ligjit the Sisters’ Musical Academy. This week the published resuits of Mr. A. Quaife’s (R.A.M.), examination give equal cause for satisfaction. There were 25 successful candidates, of whom 19 were from the Convent. This year’s concert for the Marist Brothers was arranged by the St. Columba Club, and was held at the Opera House last night. A splendid programme was presented to a well-filled house, dud the result will be a welcome tribute to the Brothers’ zealous work.
