On the Morals of To-day, by Thomas Slater, S.J. (Burns and Oates). - . As 1 ather Slater points out the chief cause of our modern troubles is neither economic nor political, but moral. The remedy must go to the root. It must be on moral lines. There,, is little use talking of reform as long as unprincipled and corrupt politicians like Massey, Bell; Hughes or George are in power. And they ill be tolerated until self respect and decency compel the people to kick them out. A return .to the sane principles of that Christian faith which press and politicians attack is essential. Father Slater, a theologian of repute, has given us here a collection of essays on subjects of actual interest concerning which a knowledge of Christian principles is of the first importance. The publication should be useful to both clergy and laity. The Irish Monthly ,- September, 1920.
The September issue of this fine Irish review is in keeping with the high traditions of Father Matt Russell’s old and honored publication. Now, as always, it is as soundly Catholic and Irish as it is good from a literary point of view. {lrish Monthly, Rathfarnham Castle, Dublin, 7/- yearly). The Irish Tragedy. Scotland's Disgrace, by John MacLean, M.A. (Maoriland 11 other, price twopence). ' Recently we have had more than one proof that Scotland is in sympathy with Ireland’s aims and that Scots, are deeply moved by Ireland’s wrongs. Scots are also beginning, in increasing numbers, to ask themselves why they should be governed by England, usually by a Government which is opposed to the views of the" Scottish people. Ihe Scottish (Quarterly and Libert)/ are vigorous advocates j>f independence for Scotland. Among the eloquent pleas for justice for Ireland we welcome this pamphlet by John Mac Lear. It is a stern indictment of English misrule and English brutality, and it ought to be read widely. "
