PETONE CATHOLIC SCHOOL CONCERT.

It is always a pleasure to listen to a children's entertainment, and the large gathering that assembled in the local Empire Theatre the other evening thoroughly enjoyed the excellent programme provided by the pupils of the Catholic school. The children acquitted themselves most creditably and seemed to be quite at home whether in dance or song, and showed careful training. The programme (practically every number of which received the compliment of a recall) was opened by a pianoforte solo played with great taste and expression by Miss Bolton, L.T.O.L- The girls’ choir then rendered “Flow On, Thou Shining River,” the different parts being prettily taken. The alto solo, “Oh, Where’s the Slave So Lowly?” by Miss K. Kearns, was nicely rendered. The boys’ choir was quite up to the high reputation of the girls’ choir when they sang “The Minstrel Boy.” One of the most pleasing items on the programme was the violin solo, ‘Hrish selection,” played by Miss M. ■ Arrowsmith and Master K. Morrrison. Miss K. Anderson possesses a

sweet voice, and sang very nicely “Hills of Donegal.” The dance by Miss Joan Maunder and Miss J. Carter was very cleverly executed. Miss Mollie Keating sang "Silent, O Moyle,” with pleasing effect. The second: part was opened by the piano trio "Qui Vive,” correctly played by Misses -Esma Cate, Irene Ward, and Kathleen Anderson. Master Ryder gave a recitation which was much appreciated. The gem of the evening was the vocal duet, “Erin the Tear,” by Miss A. Keating and Miss M. Gaynor. The blending of the voices was very fineMiss Irene Ward did full justice to the solo, “Oh, Erin My Country,” Miss Esma Cate gave a delightful exhibition of dancing, her movements being full of grace and ease. The action song by Miss K. Culshaw and Miss E. Cate was prettily rendered. The song by the pupils was a pleasing number, as was also the chorus 'by the girls’ choir. The singing of “A Nation Once Again by the combined choirs brought a very successful evening to a close.
