A man takes contradiction and advice much more easily than people think, only he will not bear it when violently given, even though it be well founded. Hearts are like flowers: they remain open to the softly-falling dew, but shut up in the violent downpour of rain, A man, to bo greatly good, must imagine intensely and comprehensively; ho must put himself in place of another, and of many others; the pains and pleasures of his species must become his own. The great instrument of moral good is imagination, and poetry administered to the effect by acting upon the cause.
