Lower Hutt
In order to augment the school funds of the parish (writes a correspondent) a concert on a very lavish scale was given at the Town Hall,- Lower Hutt, on Tuesday, November 5 ; and notwithstanding the many calls upon the generosity of the people of the district lately the hall was crowded with an enthusiastic audience, people of all denominations showing their willingness to do their utmost to assist in any call made by the popular and much respected pastor of the Hutt parish, Dean Lane. Father Fitzgibbon, the director of the concert, who, although only a recent arrival in the Dominion, showed how qualified he was for the duty ; and the results, both musical and financial, conclusively proved his ability. As is usual with most Catholic concerts, those contributing to the programme were ex-pupils of either the convent or Brothers’ schools, and included Misses T. McEnroe, M.Mdveown, H. Segrief, Z. Chapman, I. Dennison, and J. Tracy, Messrs'. T. Wallace and H. Parker, each vocal number proving most acceptable to the large audience. Classic and fancy dancing found expert exponents in Misses T. Rogers and T. O’Carroll, who, with four little maids, members of the talented O Brien family, delighted all with their performances. A violin solo played by Master Ben O’Brien was greatly appreciated. The Lower Hutt orchestra, under the leadership of Mr. W. Taylor, contributed two numbers, which were well received. The accompaniments were ably played by Misses hi. and E. O’Brien, and M. Parker. At. the conclusion of the concert Dean Lane thanked all those who had assisted, and in a special manner Mr. G. E. Chapman, who had spent a lot of his leisure time and means in decorating and preparing the hall for the concert.
