God has given man free will as his crowning endowment.. lie docs not force that free will; but He surrounds it with moral laws whose violation lie will rigorously punish. When our Lord calls a soul to follow Him closely He begins by sending it many rough helps from the exterior. Gradually the soul receives finer helps, but at last the time comes when our Lord takes up the chisel Himself (says Rev. Win. O’Brien Pardow, S.J.). Some of us do not like Him to do this. That shows we do not understand His way of treating those lie loves.
