. —■——— : ’ ;■ 'v ■' % The students of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, reassemble on Saturday, February 23, for the re-opening after the Christmas vacation. The diocese of Dunedin will be represented at the half-yearly meeting of the Dominion Council of the Catholic Federation in .Christchurch on Wednesday, February 20, by the Very Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., and Mr. D.' L. Poppelwell.

The Rev. Dr. Casey, S.M., of Greenmeadows Seminary, assisted at the Masses in St. Joseph's Cathedral on last Sunday, and in the evening ■ gave a discourse on the Divinity of our Blessed Lord as proved by His miracles.

At the 9 o’clock Mass in St. Joseph’s Cathedral on Sunday last, which he celebrated, his Lordship the Bishop, read, and explained the Lenten regulations, and exhorted the congregation to a faithful observance of the holy season by prayer, a frequent reception of Holy Communion, and in penitential exercises, especially now that the Lenten requirements are lessened to such an extent.

At a pleasant little function at the Police Station; Christchurch, on Monday, February 5, a presentation of a case of pipes and smoker’s requisites was made to ex-Chief-Detective Herbert, for a number of years resident in Dunedin, and later of Christchurch, who recently retired on superannuation. Chief-Detective Mcllveney, in maikng the presentation on behalf of his colleagues, made eulogistic reference to the recipient’s good qualities. v . ;

A meeting was held in St. Joseph’s Hall after devotions on last Sunday evening to arrange for the national entertainment in celebration of. St. Patrick’s Day. The Very Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., presided, and Mr. J. Hally was elected secretary. ; On the motion of Mr. Hally, seconded by Mr F. Heley, a vote of thanks was passed, and ordered to be forwarded to Mr. H. Poppelwell, now in camp, for his - excellent and highly appreciated services for two . years as secretary, of the annual national celebration. Very Rev. |Father Coffey; intimated that His Majesty’s' Theatre had - been engaged for this year’s concert, to be held on Monday evening, March 19, and that it was proposed • to • apply the proceeds to the expenditure - incurred in improvements and repairs to : St, Joseph’s School-and'surround/ ings and' to similar work; to be effected in i connection

: with the Sacred Heart fl School, North-East r Valley. Last year the .. proceeds were devoted to the _ school; in South , Dunedin, : and it y is;proposed (said v) Father ; Coffey) ;to recognise the schools as the regular object to ;be benefited by future St. Patrick’s Day entertainments. The proposition of - Father, Coffey met with general acceptance, and on his motion, seconded by Mrs. M. ; A. Jackson, the following sub-committees were elected:—ProgrammeMiss Eileen * Murphy, Messrs.
