THE TOKOMARU TORPEDOED

. A cable message received on Monday reported that the Shaw Savill and Go’s steamer, Tokomaru, which left Wellington on December 8, with a full cargo, valued at .£IOO,OOO, was torpedoed off Havre by a German submarine. Three French trawlers, which appeared on the scene soon after the explosion, took the crew to Havre. The fact that the steamer was carrying large consignments of beef for the British Army in Fiance explains her presence in the vicinity of Havre. It transpires that the only cargo for the Belgians aboard the Tokomaru was five tons of clothing from Gisborne and 11 £ tons from Napier, and possibly one case of blankets from Wellington for' Lord Kitchener’s army. The Shaw Savill boats carried altogether 200 tons of gifts for the Belgians, and the Tokomaru had less cargo of this description aboard than any other steamer.

The Tokomaru took from Gisborne 20 cases of goods for the patriotic committee.
