WELLINGTON CATHOLIC CLUB

(From an occasional correspondent.)

On Saturday, May 30, a social was tendered Mr. J. O'Brien, who has been an active member of the executive for a considerable time, on the eve of his departure for Stratford. During the evening several members spoke in appreciation of the good work done by Mr. O'Brien, and Mr. G. Dee, in presenting him with a dressing-case, wished him, on behalf of the club, success in his new 7 undertaking. Songs were rendered by Messrs. Power, J. L. Leydon, and Dee, whilst the items contributed by Messrs. Keany and Eller proved highly amusing. Mr. J. Webb acted as accompanist. On Monday evening a euchre party in aid of the club funds was held in Gamble and Creed's rooms, and was well attended. Games were played until 10 o'clock, the prize-winners, after a close competition, being Mrs. Fiss and Miss Murphy, and Messrs. Ryan and Cotter. The club's funds will benefit to a considerable extent from the entertainment which was very successful.

The literary and debating branch held their weekly meeting on Tuesday evening, when Mr. G. Dee presided over a good attendance. Two interesting papers, ' The septic system of draining,' and ' The impossibility of honesty in modern commerce,' were read by Messrs. Duffy and Daniels respectively. Both papers wero highly appreciated, and that contributed by Mr. Daniels evoked a lively discussion. Both members were accorded a hearty vote of thanks.

A billiard tournament is at present nearing completion, and the final should be played next week. The thanks of the club are due to Messrs. B. Leydon and V. O'Brien and T. Tiller for the work they havo done in connection with the tournament. A quoits tournament is to begin when the billiard contest is completed, and a large number of members are entering.

On a recent evening the members of the debating branch visited St. Anne's Club, Newtown, and presented a hand-bag to the Rev. Father J. Herring, as a mark of appreciation of the assistance rendered to the members while he was president. The Rev. Father Herring stated that although he was not now actively connected with the club, he would still continue to take a great interest in its work. Club members received news from Mr. A. H. Casey, who was for many years president of the club, and who is now in Vancouver, that he has been admitted to the Canadian Supreme Court Bar.
