ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON

A social in aid of the Sisters of Mercy, Kilbirnie, will take place at O'Donnell's Hall, Kilbirnie, on Monday, June 29.

. The interior of St. Anne's Church has just been painted and renovated. It now presents a very nice appearance, and the Ven. Archdeacon Devoy is to be congratulated on the excellent taste he has displayed in the Adornment of the sacred edifice.

In addition to the cable messages, reported in a previous issue as having been sent to the leader of the Irish Party on the third reading of the Home Rule Bill in the House of Commons, St. Patrick's branch of the Hibernian Society also cabled its congratulations.

A Triduum commenced last Friday evening at all the city churches. The Rev. Father Schaefer, S.M. (St. Patrick's College), was the preacher at St. Anne's, the Rev. Father Smyth., S.M.,* at the Sacred Heart Basilica, the Rev. Fathers Hurley, S.M., Adm., Barra, and Peoples, at St. Joseph's, and Very Rev. Father O'Connell at St. Mary's.

Tho weekly conferences, arranged by the Very Rev. Father O'Connell, S.M., every Tuesday evening at St. Mary's, are proving very successful. Last Tues'day was'the women's evening," when there was a largo attendance. The instructions are productive of much good, and Father O'Connell is to be congratulated on the success of his work.

Word has been received from the Very Rev. Dean Rognault, S.M., that he has taken a passage by the s.s. Maloja. Dean Regnault says he is very much impressed by the marvellous progress of the Church in Australia, as evidenced on all sides by the magnificent, institutions—educational and otherwise-which he saw during his short sojourn in Australia.

Mi. Michael Levy, for many years a resident of Wellington, and eldest son of the late Mr. Peter Levy, of Nelson, died last Wednesday morning in the Hospital. Ihe interment took place on Friday morning. Ihe Rev. lather Peoples, who attended deceased in his last illness, celebrated the Requiem Mass, and officiated at the graveside. A widow and throe daughters are left to mourn their loss.—R.l.P. The Catholic school committees of the St. Joseph’s and St. Mary s parishes combined for the purpose of holding the annual social in aid of the education fund, which was held last Wednesday in the Town 1 all.' There was a large attendance, and among those present were his Grace Archbishop O’Shea, Verv Rev. Father O’Connell, S.M., Rev. Fathers Hurley,’ S.M., Barra. S. and A. Venning, S.M. The first part of the entertainment was devoted to screening picture films. A moat enjoyable evening was spent, and the education Lind will benefit to the extent of approximately £IOO. The arrangements were in the capable hands' of the Rev. Father Hurley, S.M., Adm., of St. Joseph's. A very popular parishioner of St. Anne’s, and an esteemed member of St. Anne’s Club, passed away on Saturday, May 30, in the person of Mr. Joseph Wareham. The late Mr. Wareham was a very keen club member, and did yeoman service in assisting’ to make St. Anne’s a successful club. He had been troubled with an internal complaint for several years past, which ultimately caused his death. lie was attended in his illness by the Rev. Father Peoples, who administered the last Sacraments. The interment took place at Karori on June 2. The messengers of the Government. Buildings, where the deceased was employed, acted as bearers, and the Government was represented by Mr. J. Hislop and Captain Hennah. The deceased, who was only 44 years of age, leaves a widow and family of eight children.R.l.P. ST. ANNE’S CLUB, WELLINGTON SOUTH. (From the club correspondent.) Last Thursday evening the members of the St. Anne’s Literary and Debating Society held a most interesting and spirited debate 1 Should New Zealand maintain an independent local navy?’ The president (Rev. Father J. Herring, S.M.) presided. The affirmative side was taken by Messrs. J. Fagan (leader), T. 11. Forster, and A. J. llidlcr, and the negative by Messrs O. N. Foote (leader), F. Galvin, and W. Heavey. The debate, which proved to be most educative and entertaining, was decided in favor of the negative side. At its conclusion Father Herring criticised the various speeches, pointing out any faults of style, etc. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the rev. chairman.

The parish is very fortunate in having a- first-class ladies' club. The programmes of both clubs for the year consist of many social functions. The clubs have already had this season a most enjoyable re-union, and it is proposed to hold another on the 19th inst. One of the activities of this club, which should appeal to other clubs is the holding of evening classes for the teaching of English, arithmetic, book-keeping, or shorthand. All will see the advantage of such classes to those who have been unfortunate or careless in their school days. The tuition is free to members.
