DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

St. Joseph's parish school was examined on Tuesday by the Education Board inspectors, Messrs. Richardson and Robertson, and the iNorth-East Valley ; School on the same day by Mr, Eossence and Dr. Don. The excavations tor the new Catholic Church in the Kaikorai having been completed, workmen are now engaged in putting in the concrete foundations. The foundation stone will be laid in the course of a couple of weeks. The annual collection on behalf of the St. Vincent de Paul Society will be made at St. Joseph's Cathedral and the Church of the Sacred Heart on Sunday. It is to be hoped there will be a generous response to the appeal .01 the society, which is doing excellent work. The weekly meeting of St. Patrick's Men's Club, South Dunedin, was held in the presbytery on Monday evening, Rev. Father Delany presiding. : The programme consisted of readings and recitations by members, the following contributing items:Messrs. Lee, Robinson, McFeely, Lenihan, Casey, McAllen, Shiel, Nolan, and Carr. The club this year promises to have a very successful season. There was a good attendance at the usual weekly meeting of St. Joseph's Men's Club on Monday evening, when a debate on the subject, ' Should the Defence Act be repealed?' was held. Mr. E. W. Spain, who led in the affirmative, had the assistance of Messrs. J. Sims and T. O'Connell, and Mr. J. A twill in the negative was supported by Messrs. lE. Gallagher, M. McKeefry, J. Airey, and J. Kilmartin. On the vote being put to the meeting the negative side were declared the winners. A very successful euchre party in aid of the building -fund of the new Catholic Church, Kaikorai Valley, was held in the Wakari Hall on Friday evening. There was a very large attendance, including visitors from the city and South Dunedin. Mrs. Atwill won the lady's prize, and Mr. Keyes the gentleman's. During the evening songs were contributed by Misses Bryant and Burns, and Messrs. Graham . and Fogarty. A generous supply of light refreshments was provided by the committee. On Sunday, the Feast of Pentecost, there was . Pontifical High Mass at St. Joseph's Cathedral at 11 o'clock. His Lordship the Bishop was celebrant, Rev. Father Liston (Rector of Holy Cross College) assistant priest, Rev. Father Collins deacon, Rev. Father Buckley subdeacon, and Rev.-Father Coffey, Adm., master of ceremonies. The sermon on the day's festival was preached by Rev. Father Collins. The choir rendered the music of Gounod's No. 3 Mass under the baton of Mr. A. Vallis, Miss M. Callan being at the organ. The Gregorian Proper of the Mass was chanted by male voices, with the exception of the Sequence, ' Veni Sancte Spiritus,' which was sung by the whole choir. The ' Ecce Sacerdos Magnus ' . was sung as the procession entered the sanctuary, and the offertory was Vogler's 'Veni Sancte Spiritus.' The sermon in the even- . ing on the ' Church ' was preached by the Rev. Father Coffey. After Vespers there was a reception of Children of Mary, when 12 young ladies were received into the confraternity. His Lordship the Bishop officiated and was assisted by the Cathedral clergy. ' A very successful entertainment in aid of the funds of St. Joseph's Hockey Club was given in St. Joseph's Hall on Tuesday evening, when there was a large attendance. nium solo, Mr, F. Clark; song, ‘Waiata poi,’ Miss Nellie Taylor; song, ‘Going to sea,’ Mr. Frank Perkins; instrumental selection, Messrs. F. and M. Clark and Miss M. Clark; song, Mr .J, McGrath; recitation, Miss Ivah Gran; song, ‘ Wise folly,’ Miss Helen Gardner; sailor’s hornpipe (in costume), Miss Annie Holden; cornet solo, Mr. M. Clark; song, ‘ Golden gift,’ Miss M. Lemon; song, Miss Ross; song, ‘Farewell to summer,’ Miss Nellie Taylor. The accompaniments were played by Misses Queenie Foster and M. Clark, and Mr. Beck. The entertainment was one of the best given in St. Joseph’s Flail for some time, and nearly every item was encored. The secretary of the club (Miss Munro) and the committee are to be congratulated on arranging such a fine programme, and complimented on the artistic decorations of the stage. - _ On Sunday afternoon, the solemn ceremonies by which the Children of Mary, South Dunedin, annually commemorate the close of the month of May, took place. At 3 o’clock the procession was formed. It was headed by a cross-bearer, then came the president (Miss Dunford), carrying the associates’ banner of the Immaculate Conception, the members in regalia, the aspirants, wearing wreaths and veils. Leaving St. Patrick s School, it went around the Convent of Our Lady of Mercy and St. Philomena’s College, and across Adelaide street into the grounds of St. Vincent’s Orphanage. On a portable rest, presented to the sodality by Mr. J. J. Marlow, the statue of our Blessed Lady, surrounded by an arch of white flowers, was borne by Misses McGowan, Rodden, N. Dunford, and Cameron The Rosary was recited by Rev. Father Delany and the processionists. The Litany of the Blessed Virgin and several hymns Avere sung. A temporary altar, tastefully draped in blue and white, profusely adorned with choree flowers and palms, and brilliantly lighted, was erected on the ambulatory. Here Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament was given, Rev. Father O’Neill officiating. The procession returned through the convent grounds to the school. The weather was perfect, a large assemblage of spectators was present, and all who took part in the beautiful ceremony were edified and deeply impressed. The reception of new members takes place every year on the last Sunday of May. During the evening devotions it was duly'carried out in St Patrick’s Basilica. The spiritual director, Rev. Father Delany, received 19 members, gave the badge to 25 aspirants, and admitted 9 new members to the sodality The sermon was preached by Rev. Father Liston, Rector of Holy Cross College.
