His Grace the Archbishop will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to-morrow to a number of candidates at the Sacred Heart Church, Porirua. "W The parishioners of the popular seaside resort, Muritai, will hold an Irish national concert on Saturday, March 16, in aid of the funds of the Church of San Antonio. / Tbe'Rev, Father Peoples, S.M., late of Thorndon, took oyer his new duties at Wellington South yesterday. He has been appointed spiritual director to the confraternity of the Sacred Heart. . The Marist Missioners, Rev. Fathers O’Connell, Kimbell, and McCarthy, are now in Wellington, and will commence a mission at the Sacred Heart Basilica, Thorndon, on to-morrow. Boulcott street. $1? The Rev. Father Schaeffer, S.M., of St. Patrick’s College, is preaching a course of Lenten sermons on the Blessed Eucharist at St. Joseph’s Church, Buckle street. ./,.. Last Sunday the Rev. Father preached an eloquent and instructive sermon on 1 Transubstantiatiqn,’|yvhich he explained fully. There was a large congregation. A beautiful picture, representing St. Anne and the Blessed Virgin, has been presented to St. Anne’s Church, Wellington South, and on last Sunday evening was blessed by the Yen. Archdeacon Devoy, S.M. The picture, which is a life-size one, has been hung immediately over the Communion rails, and adds materially to the adornment of the church. On Friday afternoon next, at the Basin Reserve, the present students of St. Patrick’s College will meet the old boys in a friendly game of cricket. It is-the intention of the college authorities to form a cricket club in place of the one which has been non-existent for ■ some years-past. The Rev. Father Eccleton has its formation in hand, and is endeavoring to secure a suitable coach. : . ' . Mr. George Brown, of Buller street, who recently underwent an operation at the Kensington street Private Hospital,, is now reported to be doing fairly well, and he has returned to his home. Mr. Brown' is one ;of the oldest settlers in the Wellington district, and for a great many years he resided at the Upper Unit. He is a prominent member of St. Mary’s Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. A ‘Mr. C. J. Lennon, of the Telegraph Department, Wellington, and a prominent member of the H.A.C.B. /Society, has been granted six months’ leave of absence, and left by the Maunganui on Friday on a visit to •Australia, it being his intention to gain some practical experience in wireless telegraphy; of which subject he has been a student for the past three years. He has been nine years in the Telegraph Department, and is at present stationed at Te Aro Post Office. ■ y The sodality of the Children of Mary in connection with the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Island Bay, which has undertaken the making of Church linen and vestments, has been turning out some very excellent work under the excellent direction of the religious of

the Sacred Heart, who are noted for their artistic taste. A most beautiful banner has just been completed for St. Mary of the Angels’ Church, which reflects the greatest credit on the members of the sodality and their teachers. , A feature of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration at Newtown Park will be the Irish jig competition, for which Mr. Frank McFarland has offered a solid gold medal to the winner. The tug-of-war will also be an attractive item. In the morning the children from boys’ and girls’ Catholic schools will be catered for by a special programme, and good prizes awarded the winners. In the afternoon a lengthy and varied programme will be served up. * A silver cup, donated by Messrs. Sullivan and Fitzgibbon, will be awarded to the champion boy runner, in a half-mile contest, among the students of the Marist Brothers’ schools. The military are to be catered for by a cadets-in-uniform race, tent pitching, physical drill, and bugle-cal! competition. Popular local talent has been secured for the Irish concert to be held in the Town Hall on Monday evening, March 18. In addition, Miss Adelaide Bruce, a Melbourne singer, who was specially engaged to sing at the opening of Auckland’s Town id all, and Mr. Farquhar Young, the Christchurch baritone, have been engaged. The St. Patrick’s Seamen’s Conference of the St. "Vincent de Paul Society held,a very good meeting last evening under the presidency of the chanlain (Rev. bather C. J. Venning, S.M.), at the Guildford terrace schoolroom. A feature of the meeting was the number of new members enrolled and the general enthusiasm displayed. Steps were taken to revive for the coming winter the fortnightly, concerts for. the seamen. Reports from the officers disclosed the fact that there was a great deal of work to be done, as Wellington was the Dominion s , busiest seaport, therefore it was essential that the membership should be increased to successfully carry out the objects of the conference. Another work the conference is about to take up is that amongst the Italian sailors and fishermen by- the distribution amongst thein of Italian Catholic "homilies, etc. This literature is printed by the Rome Catholic Club for distributing, and is doing a wonderful amount of good. The Rev! Father Venning, who has been giving attention for some years to the 'deplorable indifference of Italian Catholics who settle in the Dominion, has, through the good offices of the Rev. Father Geaney, S.M.,’ who is in Rome, got into touch with the Rome Catholic Club, with the result that the club will give every assistance to the conference to carry out the work amongst the Italians here.
