Hokitika
The Irish Home " Rule envoys, - Messrs. Redmond and Donovan, arrived hero on last Wednesday evening, and were accorded a very hearty reception, being met at the railway station by a large gathering, and welcomed in a felicitous speech by the member for the district (Mr. T. E. Y. Seddon). In the evening they addressed a crowded audience in the Princess Theatre. . The amount collected in the Hokitika district in aid of the Home Rule, fund totalled, about £lls. A resolution in favor of Home Rule was carried on the motion of the member for the district, seconded by Mr. T. W. Duff (County Chairman), while a vote of thanks was accorded the delegates on the motion of Mr. H. L. Michel (chairman of the Harbor Board), seconded by Mr. T. Borkan (chairman.of the Rimu Miners’ Association). On Thursday evening the delegates visited Ross, where they were accorded a remarkably enthusiastic reception, being welcomed by the Mayor (Mr. T. W. Bruce),; town councillors, the band, and a large concourse of residents. The collection, which for the district is a very good one, amounted to about £BO. The delegates during their stay in Hokitika were the guests of Rev. Father Clancy, while at Ross they were the guests of Rev. Father O’Connor. The members of the Hokitika reception committee, especially the chairman (Mr. C. Ward), the secretary (Mr. Jas. P. Downey), and the collectors (Messrs. Daly and Cahill), are deserving of commendation for their energetic work in connection with the visit of the envoys. . It is gratifying, to know that the West Coast has maintained its reputation for liberality, as denoted by the fact that the handsome amount of about £I2OO has been subscribed towards the Home Rule fund at the half-dozen, or so centres which the envoys have visited.
