GREYMOUTH
(From our own correspondent.) September. 8. The usual weekly meeting of the St. Columba Club was held last Monday eviening. The programme for the evening wias a debate, ' Is Australia justified in excluding the Japanese ? ' Messrs. J. Brook's, P. Devon-port, attvd 8,. C. Heffewian spoke in the affirmative, and Rev. Father. Taylor, Brother Alfred, and Mr. W. Duffy took the nefcfctilve si'd(e. Aftex an interesting and keenlycontested debate the jurdges decided in favor of the affirmative. Roy. Fait-her Leen, of Atoaura, paid a visit to the cftifo rooms last weak and expressed his pleasure at the progress of the club. It is with sincere regret I have to record the death of Mr. Moritih K'ane, "Which took place at his residence, Httgto streets on last Friday, September 1. The deceased was one of the old band of pioneers who are disappearimoj only too qoiickly. The late Mr. Kane was a 'g^taeral favorite with all who k"new Mm, and the large numlbler who attended his funeral last Suindiay bore testimony to -the xespect in wnich he was held. Deceased was a native of Galway, and was 66 years of age. The Roy. Father Taylor officiated at the church anri grave.— R.l. P. Last Sunday the members of the Hibernian Society umWed with the members of the St. Columba CKi'b in m4W*ng a genferal Communion. It was an edifying sight toi see such, numbers (abooit eighty) approiaeh the Body* IJatyle. The men nvarched in procession from the cl-uW rooms anH occupied the front seats in the chuiteh. The local /branch 'of the Hibernian Society stili continues to increase in memtteirship . At the last meeting five newi members were initiated and three candidates were proposied, which brings the total up to 62 members. This ppsitiion is considered very satisfactory. The present position is due in a large measure to the appeal made aifter last mission by Rev. Father Clune to the Catholic yoiumg men of Greymio/uth to join' this excel lenttt society.
