Temuka

(From our own correspondent.)

August 21. Owing to the Yen. Archdeacon Devoy being unable to reach Temuka lor Sunday next, there will be but one Mast on that day, and that will be at 8 a.m.

At the meeting held on Sunday in connection with the completion of the piesbytery, Mr. W. Barry introduced the subject of erecting a memorial to the late Father Fanvel. The suggestion was eagerly taken up, and it was agreed to bold a moetwig at an early date for the purpose of carrying out the suggestion.

The plans laid before the meeting on Sunday last showing the presbytery when completed, point to Temuka having a residence for their priests which will be in keeping with their beautiful Church and handsome convent. The building will be of tyrick, two storeys m height, and have a balcony running from the front right round to the end of one side.

The usual weekly meeting of the Young Men's Club was held on Tuesday evening last- There was -a large attendance, and one new member was elected. The programme for the even-ing was the ever popular ' Editor's box,' a considerable number of instructive and amusing questions being asked and answered. Members are eagerly looking forward to the 29th inst., on which evening the Rev. Father Regnault, of Waimate, has promised to deliver a lecture on the ' South and West of Ireland. 1

In my notes of last week I notice you refer to the donor of the banquet to the Young Men's Club as a gentleman. This is incorrect, as those responsible for the excellent spread were lady friends'. The meeting, called for after the last Mass on Sunday, for the purpose of considering ways and means of raising funds for the completion of the presbytery, was very largely attended. Mr. W. Tarrant, who presided, said that there was in hand already a sum of about £400, and that they would require to raise a like amount in order to» have the work carried to a successful issue. It was eventually decided that a committee, consisting of Messrs, J. Dwyer, J. M'Auhffe, W. Barry, W. FiUgerald, jim., D. Enright, H. Warring, J. Gaffeney, T. BrosnaJhan, W. Moore, J. McCabe, P. Mitten, and J. P. Kalaugher be appointed, to draw up and lay proposals for raising funds for the work before another meeting to be held in a fortnight's time. Rev. Father Kerley was appointed "hon. treasurer, and Mr. J. Moriarty hon. secretary of the committee. At a committee meeting, hekl after the general meeting, it was decided to make a house-to-house canvass of the parish for subscriptions, and to arrange an art union to be drawn on St. Patrick's night.
