ARCHBISHOP CARR IN AMERICA.

Ali viiiiMui 1 !. <■) it ;i i i icm' ul t'lc Xc v York I'rr •ui'iii v -Journal, writing on .Maj - -ays — Mo^t Rev. Thorn i^ Ji-'-ph Cut, Archbishop of Melbourne, Australia, who is i n rout/ tor Ins bom > trora a visit to Rome, spent part of last week m Baltimore, the guest of the Cardinal. On last Wednesday hi^ Grace visited Washington, where he dined at the Catholic University with the rector, Mgr. Conaty. On Thursday he accompanied the Cardinal on a visit to St. Mary's Industrial School, where they were suitably received by the director, Brother Dominic, and his assistants. Th<> Brother had the nearly seven hundred boys of the institution called from their various vocations to the assembly hall, and from whom the illustrious i visitors received an exceptionally cordial welcome, as they entered to the mutic of the superb band of the institution, lhe boys wore the same garb as that in which they laid down the shovel and the hoe, the jack-plane and the paint-brush, and shooting-stick of the printing oftVe when called from their labour. In his brief address to the boys the Archbishop said :—: — ' I prefer to meet you thus in your working clothes than in your Sunday-go-to-meeting-dre«s. The Rough Itid<rs fought brilliantly in the war with Spain, but a review of them in their campaign clothing would be much more interesting than if they were decked out in the trappings of dress parade.' The address of his Eminence followed that of the Archbishop. In closing his remarks, in which he highly complimented the Brothers and the boys, he proposed that the latter be given the remainder of the day as a holiday. When he j came to this point he thought it best to put the question to a vote, and asked that all of the boys who favoured a holiday should vote ! ' Yea.' His Eminence was greeted with a volume of ' Yeas ' that I left no doubt of the desire of the assemblage. However, he called 1 for ' Nays.' There was 'nary a ' nay," and his Eminence announced ' that 'the yeas had it,' which was followed by laughter and handI clapping. At the suggestion ot the Cardinal, Archbishop Carr gave ! his bles-sing to the boys, all kneeling, and the two eminent prelates i then entered their carriage and, arid the cheers of the boys and the music of the bands, left fur a visit to S'j. Agnes' Hospital, where they had a generous welcome fiom the laculty and Sisters. From there they returned to the city. Iv the evening Archbishop Carr left for San Francisco, from which port he will sail for Melbourne.
