DUNEDIN CATHOLIC LITERARY SOCIETY.

The weekly meeting of this Society was held in the Christian Brothers' Schoolroom on Friday evening, July 16. There was a capLtal attendance of members and a really good programme was got through with much credit.

The recitations, by Messrs. Leo Pastorelli and C. Delany, both of whom made their debut as reciters, were very well received, and we fully expect to hear of these young gentlemen again in some of the more ambitious efforts of our young men. Mr. J. Black recited " The engine driver's story," and Mr. J. Hill gave " Brutus' address to the Romans.'" Both gentlemen acquitted themselves in a masterly style. Mr. S.Columb read the beautiful piece entitled "The companionship of books ,"' with grace and finish. Mr. J. Hally contributed a humorous reading with so much skill as to fairly convulse his hearers with laughter. The principal feature of the evening was Mr. F. W. Petre's lecture on " Art and architecture." The lecturer traced the early history of these arts from primitive times in an easy and pleasant manner, introducing many very beautiful incidents. He also related, with much success, the legend connected with the plans of the famous architectural pile, the Cologne Cathedral. Several members — notably Mr. Haughton — bestowed the highest praise on the lecturer for his masterly effort,
