T E M U KA.

(Prom an Occasional Correspondent.)

July 28tb, 1894. No doubt your m%ny readers will be pleased to learn the htulth of the Rev Father Fauvel continues to improve. The improvement, true, is slow, but it is nevertheless sure. The rev gentleman has been visited by many friends from a distance, including the Vic*r-Gtaneral Rev Father Cummings, and much sympathy has been shown tow.rds him.

An "open" meeting of the Literary and Mutual Improvement Society was held on Thors lay evening Ust, anl there w-»s a large attendance, St JosepVe schoolroom being well filled. Some came from as far as over tea miles. Father Malone (president)' occupied th« chair, and, after a few remarks, opened procsedings with a song, entitled " Tired," for which he was loudly app'auded. The trio, "Wild Sea Waves," was sweetly rendered by Mißses Connolly and L. Qainn, and Messrs H. and R. Hoare treatel the audience to a piccolo and piano dust. Tbe president then introduced Mr J. Gilleapie, wbo bad kindly consented to read a paper on " Oliver Goldsmith." Th« paper lasted for about half an hour, and was most enj y*ble. Tbe writer traced the poet from the " cradle to the grave," and pictured his many peculiarities in a vivid light, throwing an occasional ray of hnmonr into tbe paper, which was much appreciated by the audience. At the conclusion Father Malone spoke in eolugis ie terms of the excellence of the paper, and be was pleased to see sne 1 ) a production from one of our Catholic young men, the example of which study the rev gentleman reCDmmended to others of the same following. Later on Father Malone, in inviting any qics ions which it mig it be desired to ask of tbe writer of tbe paper, said he thought nothing was

omitted wtneb c nld bd desired. Oa the motion of Mr roia-cutk, seconded by Father Malone, a very hearty vote of tbanks was accorded to Mr Gilleepie, which he acknowledged in graceful terms. Tbe musical portion of the programme was then resumed. Miss Connolly was very successful with the solo " Killarney," which wa6 succeeded by an instrumental trio (piano and violinß), in which Mr D. Honre and Messrs H. and R. Hoard guve a good account of themselves. Tbe tong and chorus " Just before the battle, motber," was sung by a company in good style, and Mr G. Barrett guva the character song ""Everyday life," with much animation. Mißs Maggie Hoare's rendition of "Yd banks and braes" was capital, tbe accompaniment being supplied by Miss D. Hoare (piano), and Mr H. Hjare (»iolin). Father M.lone next sang " lieeign»tioo," accompanying himself, ash« did with his former soog. The comic song " Djwd went McGinty," by Mr G. Barrett brought tbe programme to a close. Mr M. Quinn {vice-president) proposed a htarty vote of thanks to Father Malunr, and expressed the hope that the object for k whicb tbe rev gentleman had worked so assiduously had been achieved. Mr Quinn accompanied tbe most of the song", and it waa on^account of his tasteful and artistic manipulation of tbe pianoforteithat the musical portion of the programme was so successful.

Tbe new organ will arrive on Moaiay,£thef, cost of which is £95. It will be erected during the week.

I will again remind yoar readers in this district that the concert in aid of St J soph's school, K-rrytowo; will be held on Thursday, August 9th. It is to hoped that tbe schoolroom will be packed to excess.
