CHRISTCHURCH.
(From our own Correspondent. 1 AM extraordinary act of sacrilege was perpetrated at our proCathedral last week. Some person or persons entered the sacristy •md abstracted the ciborium (valued 35 pounds). Some days after the theft had been committed tbe ciborium was found on the verandah of the presbytery wrapped carefully in paper and in a small bag. It bore mark* of having been filed and tbe base and traces of having been subjected to acid tests. There is no clue to tbe perpetrators of tbe outrage. A convention of women was held in tbe Oddfellows' hall, Licb field street, on Wednesday evening last for the purpose of receiving applications from those who desired to be placed on the electoral roll. There were between 400 and 500 present and the proceedings were presided over by Mesdames Sheppard and Newton. Mrs Sheppard gave a short address and said it was delightful to see such interest taken in the matter. This would be the first country in the world excepting tht State of Wyoming to adopt the female franchise, that was if the Governor gave his assent to the Bill, She explained thatiif the Governor gave bis assent the names taken that night would be legal, bat if he did not give it that night or next day they would have to trouble the ladies to give their names in again. It was resolved to appoint a deputation of ladies consisting of Mesdames Willis, Muunings and Dyson to wait upon the new Liberal association meeting in St John's schoolroom to aßk them to telegraph to the Governor asking him to give his assent to the Bill. The many friends of Mr McCarthy will be glad to hear that he has been appointed clerk to the Heathcote Boad Board. Tbe fact that Mr McCarthy was unanimously elected from among a very large number of candidates speaks volumes for his credentials, and no doubt his sterling qualifications and varied experience will enable him to fill the position with credit to himself and benefit to the body by whom he is employed. The new Catholic Church at Leeston is rapidly nearing completion, the walls are now up, good progress is being made with tbe tower. The principals for tbe roof are ready to be put in position, while tbe whole of the carpentering and joinery work is well in hand A very successful entertainment was given ia the Papanui Hall on Thursday evening last by the St Aloysius Guild, in aid of St Joseph's school Papanui, before a large and appreciative audience. The programms, which was a very good one, was gone throngh without a hitch. Songs, etc, were capitally rendered by Misses Poff, Oakes and Cnnningham and Messrs Goggin, Bagley, Oakes, Dobbg, Finlay, McNamara, Beamißh and Hennessy, Master T. Falvey danced an Irish jig. A very pleasant evening was brought to a close with the farce " Paddy Miles, the Limerick Boy " which kept tbe audience in roars of laughter throughout and in which the following took part. Messrs J. Finley, (Paddy Miles) M. McNamara, A. Dobbs, T. Connolly, M, Hughes, T. Carr, and Goggin. Mr C. A. Oakes presided at the pianoforte duriog the evening .
