DUNEDIN CATHOLIC LITERARY SOCIETY.
At the ordinary meeting of the Dunedin Catholic Literary Society, on Wednesday last, the chair was taken by the Rev. President. A paper on " The fall of the English Baronage " from Mr Gilfedder, an old member of the society, was read by Mr Eager. The paper deserved gre«t credit, the composition being good, and the subject treatei in a very interesting manner. The writer began by showiog how the Feudal system originated at the time of William the Conqueror, and after following its career through the pages of history, explained the principal causes which led to its final decay in the 15th century. A rather lively discussion ensued, which was taken part in by Messrs P. Hally, McKeay.B. Eager, E. W. Dunne, Drumm, Miller, and J. J. Dunne, the two first-nam9d gentlemen proposing a vote a thanks, which was carried unanimously. Mr Carolin read a story of his own composition. The scene was laid in Mayo and was descriptive of country life in Ireland ; this item also excited a good deal of criticism. A vote of thanks was carried on the motion of Messrs Hal'y and Drumm, the other critics being Messrs J. Eager, Miller, McKeay and Lynch. The ques'ion of having a concert to provide funds for the library was discusse 1, but the majority of the members were of opinion that it would be likely to claßh with the bazaar if hell at the present time ; it was therefore decided to put it off till next session. The customary compliment to the chair concluded the proceedings.
