FOOTBALL.
On Saturday, the 29th of August, the members of Timarn Catholic School football club proceeded to Waimate by coach to play the first fifteen of the Waimate District High School. The following played for Timaru :— Full-back, J Kane; three-quarters, P Pearce, F McGowan, J Gaffney ; halves, H Gardner aad D Wilson ; forwardsi A Niall, D O'Connel, W Byrne, G Yenning, P Gaffaney, T Mara, H Wareing, T Pearce, and T Collins. The following boys accompanied them to Waimate :— R Home, D Whelan, Joe Delaney, Jim Delaney, N. McGuinness, T Leahy, M Whelan, J Yenning, G Karton. They arrived in Waimate about twelve o'clock, and weie invited to dinner at the Empire Hotel at half- past twelve. At half-past one a start was made for Victoria Park, where play was started at two o'clock sharp. The Timaru captain won the toss, and chose to play with the aun at his back. Niall kicked off for Timaru, and Freeman secured ball, and after a fine run scored behind the poßts, and placed a neat goal. Freeman returned the kick-off, and the Waimate forwards by following up kept the ball well in. the Timaru twenty-five, and Kett hand-balling without being noticed by i the referee, scored. Freeman failed toiconvert, and shortly after half-time was called. For a short time after the kick-off the ball was kept in.the.'centre, but the Timaru forwards worked the ball into the Waimate twenty-five, when the Timaru backs passing well out, Pearce after a brilliant run scored amidst applause. He took the kickHhimself, but failed to convert. Freeman kicked off, which was well returned by Kane. Freeman Becured8 ecured the ball, and kicked into touch. From the line-out the Timaru backs again started passing, when Pearce, after another fine run, again scored ; but Niall failed to increase the score. Freeman kicked off, and byifollowing up well, secured the ball and BCored amidst great excitement, and taking the kick himself easily converted. Niall kicked off, and Freeman returned into touch. From the line out the Timaru forwards worked the ball into the Waimate twenty five, and thsy certainly looked like scoring when the whistle sounded. For Timaru, Niall. Byrne, O'Connel, and P Gaffaney were the pick of the forwards, while Wilson, Gardner, Gaffaney, Pearce, X »ne, and McGowan were the pick of the backs. For Waimatei Clarke, Presland, Rattray and Williams were the pick of the forwards, while Buchanan, Presland, Freeman, and Kett were the pick of the backs. Messrs McMonagle and Poison acted as umpires, respectively while Mr Manchester acted as referee. '
